I dont know, the future of smart phones is going where? but i have seen the latest preview of the Mango phone and this is truly a bomb blast from Microsoft in the current era of smart phones. However the OS still far behind the legendary Symbian in terms of features. But it can outperfom any other reveals in terms of performance, user experience and simplicity. A lot of services including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn , SkyDrive etc. are integrated tightly to make UX ever better.

And personaly the Metru UI is damn awesome.
