Vodafone Idea Lost Over 6.5 Million Subscribers During November 2018: COAI

Right after the Trai releasing its subscriber addition for the month of October, the COAI has now announced the data of November 2018. During November, Vodafone Idea lost over 6.5 million subscribers, but it still remained the leading telecom operator with 420 million subscribers under its belt. Bharti Airtel, on the other hand, added just over a lakh new subscribers, which comes as a relief for the telco as it lost subscribers on a large number during September and October months. “Vodafone Idea, however, continued to lose customers for the third consecutive month in November after completion of their merger,” said a PTI report, citing COAI data.

As noted, the combined entity lost over 6.5 million subscribers in November but still remained the largest mobile services provider in the country with a user base of over 420 million, the COAI data released on Thursday showed.

In September and October, Bharti lost over 2.3 million and 1.8 million customers respectively while Vodafone Idea lost over 6.6 million and 7.3 million customers during these two months. New entrant Reliance Jio has been continuously adding new customers. However, its new customer addition data for the month of November was not available. Yesterday, Trai stated that Jio added more than 10 million subscribers during October which took its user base to 262.3 million.

“Mobile connectivity and data services are imperative in the goal to bridge the digital divide in India. With these tools, we can move towards a truly equitable and democratic nation. The telecom industry, therefore, deserves an urgent and immediate intervention to encourage policy and regulatory stability, and facilitate growth, innovation and investment in the sector,” COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews said.

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) does not capture the monthly subscriber figures of BSNL, MTNL, Tata and Reliance Communication. It shared subscriber base detail of Reliance Jio Infocomm based on information available from the telecom regulator Trai.

Airtel might have not upgraded your site with band 40. They are upgrading their sites with full fledge band 40 deployment. This started in Mumbai and Pune from January 2018 and speeds rised exponentially. Earlier there was only band 1. I hope your site will upgraded soon. By the end of the year they are planning to add spectrum from band 40 if auction happens otherwise they will add band 1 by shutting down 3G.

What is Vodafone’s chief is doing.

This is best opportunity to enter into MVNO space.

Idea can be strong player in rural, tier1,2,3 area’s and operate idea gallary.

Vodafone can be MVNO brand with focus on Premium customer from Metro and urabn with focus on Postpaid and high APRU prepaid subsciber with marketing comapnain… Super 4G…

Yes. See how things turned after merger: Idea plans were modified to Vodafone’s pattern and not vice versa. Everything customer facing is Vodafone based now. Even idea now offering red hot deals under different name. This is reflective of Vodafone’s intent to keep it’s brand alive considering the far deeper connect of idea to the masses of india. This is only logical if they feel it’s possible to takeover idea. Remember that Vodafone was forced into 50-50 deal with idea though they were looking for a buyout because of Jio pressure and AB group wanting to save face in front… Read more »

I hope this really happens. But They should make serious investments to match Airtel first and then Jio. Coverage is still good enough in my opinion. But They need to refarm LTE on Band 8. I hope that happens in this year itself. Band 41 can be deployed as well. I am yet to see full fledge deployment of Band 41. Don’t know what they are waiting for.
