The Phablet wars: Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Follow Us

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has been launched in India and it is being held against Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra. So let us skip the jibber-jabber and get going right away by comparing the two devices.

Let us have a comparative look at these two devices to deduce which one is better:

Samsung Galaxy Note 3Built: The dimensions of Galaxy Note 3 are 5.95 x 3.12 x 0.33 inches and it weighs about 168 grams. On the other hand, the dimensions of Xperia Z Ultra are 7.06 x 3.63 x 0.26 inches and it weighs about 212 grams. It is also dust and water resistant. Since both of them stretch beyond the single-hand use size, I’ll put a plus one in favour of the Xperia Z Ultra because it brings water and dust resistance to the table.

Display: The Note 3 carries a Super AMOLED touch display of 5.7 inches. Xperia Z Ultra comes with a 6.4 inch TFT touch display. Both the phones offer 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. 6.4 inches seems a bit of an overstretch so Note 3 gets a point in its favour in this department. Scores tied.

Processor: Both the smartphones come with quite the capable processors. The Xperia Z Ultra has been equipped with Quad core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 processor whereas the Note 3 gets a 1.9 GHz Exynos Octa Core processor which is essentially two quad core processors put together. The Xperia Z Ultra emerges out as the better of the two in the processing department.

Operating System: The Galaxy Note 3 functions on Android 4.3 version, however, Xperia Z Ultra functions on Android 4.2.2 version. Note 3 again makes things equal by running on a slightly newer version of Android.

Memory: The Galaxy Note 3 comes with a RAM of 3072 MB and an inbuilt storage of 32 GB. While Xperia Z Ultra offers a RAM of 2048 MB and inbuilt memory of 16 GB. Both the phones feature expandable memory of up to 64 GB. And with this, the Note 3 gets the lead.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra IndiaCamera: The Galaxy Note 3 has been loaded with a primary camera of 13 mega pixels while the Xperia Z Ultra comes with a primary camera of 8 mega pixels. They both have a 2 mega pixel front facing camera. With a way better rear camera, the Note 3 extends the lead over the Xperia Z Ultra.

Connectivity Features: The connectivity options by both the smartphones are 3G, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, Mobile Hotspot and micro USB. The Note 3 also offers Wi-Fi direct option. We’ll call it a tie in this department.

Battery: The Galaxy Note 3 comes equipped with a Li- ion battery of 3,200 mAh. However, The Sony Xperia Z Ultra comes with a Li- ion battery of 3,000 mAh. Advantage Note 3 and the things don’t seem rosy for the Sony offering.

Price: The Note 3 is on sale for Rs 49,900 whereas the Xperia Z Ultra is available for Rs 39,799. And this can be the factor that nullifies the lead that the Note 3 has.

Our Take: The Note 3 gets a slew of functionalities courtesy the S-Pen and the Xperia Z Ultra misses out on all of them. But when it boils down to the value for money and practicality factor, the Xperia Z Ultra takes the cake as it offers protection against water and dust and the final nail in the coffin is its price which is Rs 10,000 less than the Note 3. For me, the Xperia Z Ultra makes a lot more sense. What about you?
