Apart from the Xperia C5 Ultra phablet that was announced today, Sony also announced a ‘Super Mid-Range’ smartphone, the Xperia M5, today. Sony is highlighting its 21.5-megapixel camera on the rear, 13-megapixel camera on the front, and its water-resistance ability.

It comes with a 5-inch IPS LCD display that’s bright, and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. On the inside, it features an octa-core processor from MediaTek, the MT6752, that features 64-bit Cortex-A54 CPU cores that are clocked at 2.0GHZ, and an PowerVR G6200 GPU. There’s 3GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot that can accommodate cards of upto 200GB.
The 21.5-megapixel primary camera uses a Sony Exmor RS sensor with Hybrid Autofocus technology, and Sony claims that it allows the camera to focus under 0.25 seconds. It uses a F/2.2 aperture lens, and the camera can click HDR images and record 4K videos. The front-facing camera has a resolution of 13 megapixels, and it can record 1080p videos. For a mid-range smartphone, the camera features are quite good.

The design of the Sony Xperia M5 phone surely looks svelte, in line with the design of the Sony Xperia Z3, but Sony has still managed to make it a water-resistant device. Even though it is quite slim at just 7.6 mm, Sony has managed to keep the camera bump under the check. It comes in three colours; Black, Gold, and White. Even though it’s a water-resistant device, its microUSB port is not covered with a flap, which is a good thing. There’s a dedicated camera button, and Sony’s signature power button.
On the connectivity front, it features 4G LTE, Wi-Fi ac/b/g/n, wireless screen mirroring, DLNA, Bluetooth v4.1, NFC, and microUSB v2.0 port. There’s a 2,600 mAh battery, and Sony claims that it lasts for upto 2 days on a single charge. Even if it manages to last a single day with heavy usage, it would be pretty good when compared to flagship smartphones like the LG G4 and the Samsung Galaxy S6/S6 edge that were launched recently.
Specifications wise, it competes with the likes of the HTC Desire 826, the OnePlus 2, the Samsung Galaxy A8, the Xiaomi Mi 4 64GB, and the likes. Sony has not announced the pricing of the Xperia M5, but if it is anywhere above Rs. 30,000 mark, it will not be worth considering since you can buy the Xperia Z3
