Luxembourg-based satellite operator SES announced that it has been awarded a contract valued at USD 200 million by NATO's Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to deliver secure high-performance low-latency satellite services via its medium earth orbit (MEO) constellation. The three-year Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract, which includes two one-year options, is the first under the Global Commercially Contracted Satellite Communications Support Partnership (GCC SATCOM SP), an initiative launched by the US and Luxembourg in 2022.

MEO Global Services (MGS) will be available to NATO member countries, including the US and Luxembourg, supporting both sovereign and coalition operations. SES's O3b mPOWER system, used for MGS, is a second-generation MEO constellation featuring global ground infrastructure and open architecture, according to the official release.

"The NSPA contract vehicle accelerates government access to secure, high-performance satcom innovation," said SES. "We developed O3b mPOWER with governments' mission-critical connectivity needs in mind and have been working closely with NATO nations to ensure they receive the necessary performance, reliability, security, and control from day one."

Luxembourg's Minister of Defence added: "Luxembourg has developed significant satcom expertise, and we are pleased to leverage it for the benefit of NATO and its partners. In line with the Luxembourg Defence Space Strategy, and through SES's innovative O3b mPOWER constellation, we are helping transform government operations and enable cooperative projects, while also allowing for sovereign government communications networks."

Known for its flexibility and secure communications, the O3b mPOWER system will enable global government missions with high performance and reliability, the satellite company said.
