We are already aware that a rugged version of the Samsung Galaxy S8 has been in the works and it was previously confirmed by the company on its official website. Previously, Samsung announced that they were planning on announcing the Galaxy S8 Active soon but did not reveal more details on the same. However, new reports have surfaced online on Sunday, giving us a glimpse into the first look of the upcoming Galaxy S8 Active.

The leaked images of the handset (probably a prototype) show a Galaxy S8-like design with the fingerprint sensor placed next to the camera setup on the rear. The device seems to come with a single rear camera alongside a dual tone LED flash. According to the images, the S8 Active with the model number SM-G892A will allegedly flaunt a 4,000mAh battery, which is quite impressive. This is definitely an upgrade from the Galaxy S8 with 3,000mAh battery and even the Galaxy S8+ with 3,500mAh battery.

Besides that, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Type-C USB port, a noise-canceling mic, and a speaker grill on the bottom of the handset. The volume rocker and the power/lock button are to the left of the device while a SIM slot that doubles as a microSD card slot sits on the right side.

Going by the leaked images, the upcoming S8 Active will come with a display of the same size as the S8’s 5.8-inch unit. What stands out in terms of display is the absence of curved edges, but then again we could write it up as a durability requirement.

The South Korean smartphone maker has launched similar versions of the Galaxy S6 and S7 in the past as Galaxy S6 Active and Galaxy S7 Active. The previous Active smartphones sported physical keys for navigation, however, Samsung seems to have changed this design in the upcoming Galaxy S8 Active by replacing the rugged buttons with on-screen capacitive keys.

The smartphone is expected to run on Android Nougat 7.0 OS and sport similar specs as the Samsung Galaxy S8. If that is the case, the S8 Active will be internally powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The S8 Active will also have the option of expandable storage via the microSD card slot.

It is likely that the S8 Active will house a 12MP primary camera and an 8MP front-facing camera for selfies. The handset will also come equipped with the Qi wireless charging feature in addition to the aforementioned 4,000mAh battery.

There is no official word from Samsung on this leak. Stay tuned for more updates on the Galaxy S8 Active in the coming weeks.
