Samsung Showcases AI for All Vision at Developer Conference 2024
At the annual Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) 2024, Samsung Electronics shared its vision for a more personalised and secure experience with multi-device AI technology, themed "AI for All." The event drew around 3,000 developers, partners, and media attendees, marking a decade of collaboration and innovation, Samsung said on October 4. At SDC24, Samsung reiterated its commitment to using AI technology to unlock new possibilities, protect personal information, and enhance the daily lives of all its users.

Jong-Hee Han, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung's Device eXperience Division, emphasised the importance of open collaboration in today's AI era. "Samsung Electronics will continue advancing AI technology to a level where AI automatically recognises each user individually — from their voice to their location — to provide a more personalized experience," he explained. "These efforts will create more convenient and secure multi-device experiences by leveraging Samsung's AI-based software, platform innovation, and security technology," he added.

Samsung's Bespoke AI Appliances

The conference also highlighted advancements in Samsung's Bespoke AI appliances, which incorporate features like AI Vision Inside in refrigerators with AI Family Hub and AI Floor Detect in robotic vacuums.

According to Samsung, as of March 2024, AI Vision Inside can recognise up to 33 food items, such as fresh fruits and vegetables. If a food item is not recognisable, it may be listed as an unknown item. AI Vision Inside recognises food items based on deep learning models, which are periodically updated to improve accuracy.

Samsung says its smart home appliances leverage the best of AI technology to make life better, simpler, and easier than ever, and that capability grows even stronger with the AI-upgraded Bixby. Users can control their entire smart home from anywhere within earshot of a Bixby-enabled appliance.

Samsung AI Cast

Samsung also noted that Bixby's enhanced capabilities extend to Samsung smart TVs. The mobile remote control feature enables users to control their TV from their phone, and Samsung AI Cast can send AI-generated results from mobile devices to the TV. Available from the TV home screen, users can enjoy images and content lists developed with generative AI, including integration with ChatGPT.

Samsung said it is integrating AI across its visual display applications as well, from AI Upscaling and AI Customisation on smart TVs to offering a new Daily Board Software Development Kit (SDK) for developers to turn any smart TV screen into a one-stop shop for daily information like weather, device health, and local updates, through a new partnership with Nextdoor.

Signage Solutions with VXT

Reportedly, Samsung also showcased its signage solutions with Visual Experience Transformation (VXT), a software platform and accompanying content management solution (CMS) for content production, operation, and management. The company said that by using an AI-powered chatbot with the Pre-Integrated Repeatable Solution (PIRS) and Widget and Extension (WiNE) Framework, VXT offers efficient, streamlined signage solutions and allows developers to seamlessly integrate solutions and simplify processes on the platform.

Tizen Leverages On-Device AI

Samsung's Tizen OS will harness on-device AI to boost performance and usability, with new SDKs for developers to create innovative applications. The SmartThings platform will also leverage AI to provide real-time home management insights through the new Home Insight feature.

"Samsung is using advanced AI technology to unlock higher-level SmartThings experiences and explore a wider range of partnerships," the company said.

Edge AI technology

Samsung also introduced its plan to have all its products with screens run the SmartThings Hub. This plan includes adding Edge AI technology based on the SmartThings Hub, which embeds AI capabilities in connected home devices, contributing to the vision of a truly AI-enhanced home.

What is Edge AI? Edge AI is a technology that processes data with high-performance devices at home, without going through the cloud. It enables faster data processing and more robust security.

Passkey

Samsung also highlighted the expansion of Passkey, which will come to Tizen beginning with 2025 TV models, refrigerators with AI Family Hub, and other AI-powered home appliances.

Passkey will bring greater convenience and security to users, while also supporting web browser-based logins via mobile QR code scanning, Samsung said.
