Reliance Jio to offer 40-80 times faster Internet speed from day one: Mukesh Ambani

Reliance Industries (RIL) Chairman Mukesh said that Jio will start services with 70% coverage of India, and it will offer speeds that are 40-80 times faster than the current Internet speed from day one.

The telco would target to expand the high-speed internet coverage in the country to over 90% by 2017, according to Ambani. Speaking here at the inaugural session of Ficci Frames 2016, Ambani said that his group has invested Rs 1.5 lakh crore in Reliance Jio, and termed the telecom venture as the biggest-ever for any digital startup globally. He however didn’t share the exact commercial launch date of the much-awaited service.

Ambani said the opportunity to transform lives of 1.3 billion people motivated him to re-enter telecom sector and he believes Jio will drive the country’s ranking in mobile Internet access to among top 10 from 150 currently.

“I have no doubt with the launch of Jio our ranking will go up from 150 to among the top 10 in the next few years.”

The company was planning to commercially launch high-speed 4G network with focus on data services by last December, but later delayed the official launch. According to him, Jio’s network is engineered to provide a capacity of 10 GB per month for every user, against the current data consumption in India of about 0.15GB per month.

Reliance Jio is widely expected to soft launch its 4G services in metro cities starting April 1, 2016. It will offers service bundled with LYF smartphones, various reports suggest.

Visited Reliance digital store again today. They confirmed me that official launch is on 9th April. They even showed me test Jio SIMs, CAF forms, and how to activate and deactivate them. However, they did not mention anything about availability of SIM cards without LYF handsets. So lets see when does the launch happen for standalone sim cards.

Thanks Jagannath….just spoke to the store guy, he sounded relatively confident about the launch date of 9th April, let’s see whether he is right, by looking at how things are moving I think if not 9th then at least by 15th the launch should happen but having said that it would most probably be restricted to LYF handsets(with bundled sim) & if we are lucky then also with MIFI device…..also one more piece of info that might be handy…..the MIFI devices are in stock only in Elgin road & Nagerbazar store in Kolkata….so if anyone from Kolkata is planning to… Read more »

Even I agree. Rs.2500 or around that is a fair price for the MiFi device. But if they bundle something like 200 GB Data for 6 or 12 months or so, I wouldn’t mind paying even Rs.4000 for it.

My brother visited a Reliance Digital Express store in Pune on Saturday. The people there also confirmed that they have Jio sim cards, but sale not started then. They also hinted that MiFi device could be priced at Rs.4000/-. Just a possibility.

The price of MiFi device is expected to be around half of what they said.

I will not buy Jio Lfy handset. Their handsets are costly than the other brands. If Jio mifi device are not in range in 700 to 800 then no one will buy mifi device even if they provide free data with mifi. For a success Jio need to provide cheapest mifi devices with cheapest data pla
