Orange Poland is ramping up its Mobile Network by deploying new base stations, modernizing existing infrastructure, and introducing new technologies to meet the needs of growing mobile traffic. According to a blog post by Orange Polska, the telco has activated more than 170 new base stations that can support both 5G and 4G LTE cellular technology since September of last year.

Upgrading eNodeB Stations
However, Orange stated the most significant upgrades had been focused on eNodeB stations, responsible for delivering 4G LTE services. These stations now efficiently manage network load and control available radio resources, enabling targeted enhancements where needed.
Orange said, during modernization, crucial components such as Baseband Units (BBU) control modules, Remote Radio Units (RRU), antennas, cables, and optical fibres are replaced, according to the update. The telco said the transformation prepares the stations for the shutdown of 3G networks and the launch of LTE in the 900 MHz band. As a result, the higher generation networks can transmit more data with the same frequency resources, optimizing performance.

MIMO 4x4 Technology
The Network modernization also enabled Orange Poland to implement Multiple-Input Multiple-Output 4x4 (MIMO 4x4) technology in the 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, and 2600 MHz frequency bands. MIMO 4x4, employing four transmitting and four receiving antennas simultaneously, significantly increases data transfer capacity, leading to a potential doubling of transmission speeds of up to 600 Mbps compared to the previous MIMO 2x2 technology.
Additionally, the company said it is strategically adding new LTE sites to its network. Where user demand and network capabilities permit, Orange Poland is deploying extra LTE layers, expanding the number of frequencies used by stations. This initiative increases network throughput and coverage, providing users with improved connectivity.

Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) Implementation
While preparing for the future of 5G, Orange Poland said it is implementing the Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technique. This technology dynamically allocates the 2100 MHz frequency between the 4G and 5G networks, depending on user needs and device compatibility.
Orange said the scale of these developments is substantial, with over 170 new base stations activated and over 3000 existing stations modernized in just one year. As a result of these upgrades, Orange Poland has seen an average increase of approximately 10 percent in network throughput and a nearly 25 percent reduction in network congestion from the beginning of 2022 to May 2023.
Enhancing Energy Efficiency
Moreover, modernization has led to increased energy efficiency in the LTE network. Orange Poland is achieving higher capacity or extended coverage with the same energy consumption, aligning with the company's commitment to becoming more environmentally friendly.
