Design and Display

Design is one department where Oppo has taken a massive step by implementing a petal shaped texture and gradient colour. Undoubtedly, the Oppo F9 Pro comes with eye-catchy designs on the rear and front side both. The phone comes in three colour options which include - Sunrise Red, Twilight Blue and Starry Purple. Out of these three, the twilight blue and the starry purple models do not come with any texture on the back. However, the purple variant does come with stardust like the design on the rear side which has been sprayed over on the body using the “Frame Gradient” technology. With these new aesthetics, Oppo attempts to drag the attention of youth towards this new phone.

As for the other designs aspects, the phone comes with a premium feel owing to its 90.8% screen to body ratio and the waterdrop notch which unlike other phones does not occupy a large chunk of the top bar of the screen. On the rear side, the camera has been vertically oriented, and there is the signature Oppo oval shaped fingerprint sensor in the centre. The dimensions of the device measure 156.7mm*74.0mm*7.99mm and it weighs 169g. The display on the device is an impressive 6.3-inches with 19.5:9 aspect ratio and the screen renders a resolution of 1080*2340 pixels.

Performance

The Oppo F9 Pro sports the MediaTek Helio P60 processor which comes paired with 6GB of RAM. For internal storage, Oppo has launched a single 64GB variant. However, the good things to note here is that the phone comes with a triple slot meaning that users will be able to put in two SIMs and a microSD card of up to 256GB. On the software front, the handset boots the ColorOS 5.2 based on top of Android 8.1 Oreo.

The device supports dual VoLTE and packs a 3500mAh battery. The biggest highlight of this phone, as claimed by Oppo is the VOOC Flash Charge technology. Oppo has advertised this device with the tagline “5-minute charge, 2-minute talk”, meaning that only two minutes of charging is going to fetch the users 2 hours of talk time on the phone. This proprietary low voltage charging technology developed by Oppo has been claimed to be four times faster than the traditional 5V/1A. Oppo has also claimed that this VOOC technology comes with five layers of protection for the phone. Besides, the company has asserted that users will be able to use their phone even while charging to maintain the fast charging speed unlike it’s the case with other phones.

Camera and Imaging

The camera is one place where Oppo has stayed ahead of its competitors since the brand’s tagline, and the guiding principle has been the one of “selfie expert”. For the Oppo F9 Pro, the company has equipped the phone with dual rear camera setup for the first time in the F series. On the rear, we find the horizontally oriented 16MP + 2MP sensors where the 16MP shooter comes with a f/1.8 aperture allowing the phone to click appealing low-light shots. This primary camera in sync with the secondary camera will click some good bokeh shots.

Apart from this, Oppo uses AI beautification 2.1 in the portrait mode to add further light subject to the quality of the image. Users can also use the different light modes which Oppo ships in the phone. Some of them include Film Light, Natural Light and Rim Light. The camera also comes equipped with AI scene recognition wherein, 16 independent and 800 combined scenes can be recognised. Now talking about Oppo’s strong point, the selfie camera on this handset is a 25MP shooter which also touts some fantastic selfie-snapping capabilities. Again the AI beautification is used in the selfie camera as well to beautify shots and enhance facial features. There are many more exciting additions to the camera software like AR Stickers, Super Vivid mode and slow-motion video. The F9 Pro also comes with Google Lens meaning whenever you point the camera at any object, place or monument; Google Lens will pull up related data and searches from the internet.

Pricing and Availability

Like we mentioned before, Oppo has said that the phone goes live for pre-orders on August 21, whereas, the actual sales of the phone will kick-off on August 31. The price of the phone has been pegged at Rs 23,990. In the event, Oppo also unveiled the Oppo F9, another smartphone in the F series which would be launched at a later date with the price tag of Rs 19,990.
