Ooredoo Partners with ASN to Build Fibre in Gulf Submarine Cable
Ooredoo Group has signed an agreement with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to construct the Fibre in Gulf (FIG) submarine cable system, enhancing regional connectivity across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). "Ooredoo's investment will support the growth of cloud services, big data initiatives, and the acceleration of digital transformation across the region," according to the Group's announcement on January 30, 2025.

FIG Submarine Cable System

The project will establish a high-capacity, low-latency corridor connecting Qatar, Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq with Europe. With up to 24 fibre pairs and a 720 Tbps capacity, FIG will deliver connectivity to digital infrastructure, benefiting hyperscalers, businesses, governments, AI providers, and telecom operators.

According to Ooredoo, this project aligns with its strategy to lead in digital infrastructure by expanding network capacity and interconnectivity across the GCC and beyond.

Supporting Cloud Services, AI

Group CEO of Ooredoo said: "We will deliver cutting-edge technologies to the region while ensuring sustainable growth for our investors through long-term revenue from rising data demand and market leadership in digital infrastructure."

Group Chief Business Services Officer of Ooredoo said: “This will provide susbstantial benefits to hyperscalers, business customers, governments and AI application providers.

Nvidia Cloud Partnership

Ooredoo also became the first Nvidia Cloud Partner in the region in 2024 and is set to deploy advanced GPU chips during the first quarter of this year. Ooredoo Oman, an Ooredoo Group company, last year signed an agreement to land the 2Africa Cable System in Barka and Salalah in Oman.
