OnePlus Pips Apple to Emerge as First Choice for Smartphone Buyers: Report

By October 5th, 2018 AT 6:37 PM

OnePlus’ popularity as a smartphone brand grew over the last couple of years in India. This year with the OnePlus 6, it has gotten even better. A new report by market research firm, CyberMedia Research (CMR) stated that OnePlus has pipped Apple to emerge as the first choice among aspirational buyers seeking to purchase premium devices. When it comes to upcoming smartphones, the one that consumers are keenly looking for is OnePlus (36%), followed by Apple (34%) with Samsung at the third spot (18%), said the survey from CMR.

According to CMR “Mobile Industry Consumer Insight” (MICI) report, OnePlus’ appeal and promise is very high among young consumers. In the age group of 18-32, 59% of those surveyed favour OnePlus and it reigns supreme as the brand of choice for buyers.

“There is a significant bump for OnePlus in the under-40 age group, with 15% of those surveyed indicating OnePlus as their choice for their next smartphone.

“This trend points to OnePlus’s growing and enduring brand salience, a definite worrying sign for other premium smartphones, with its appeal cutting across consumer segments,” the market research firm said in a statement.

The MICI Survey was conducted across New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai in August. The respondents were students, teenagers and working professionals, according to IANS. While all premium smartphone brands enjoy significant brand loyalty amongst their users, there is a small percentage of users who are considering switching to other brands, the report noted.

“While Apple emerged as a potential choice for OnePlus users (6%) and Oppo users (18%), OnePlus stands to gain from brand switching by users currently using Apple (9%), Samsung (15%) and Vivo (16%),” the findings showed.

Among those using premium Smartphones costing more than Rs 50,000, 12% are considering switching to the OnePlus brand. Among the most anticipated features that consumers are seeking are an in-screen fingerprint sensor, wireless charging and support for AR and VR.

In other news, OnePlus is gearing up for the launch of OnePlus 6T which features the in-display fingerprint scanner. OnePlus is ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack with this smartphone, but it already launched OnePlus Type-C Bullets earphones. The launch date of the smartphone is yet to be revealed by the company.

Could be true, even i am contemplating thought to skip Iphone XS purchase this year and buy Oneplus 6T for the first time… Iphone prices above a lakh will definitely push apple fans to postpone purchase/buy from outside india or settle for something cheaper like oneplus 6T or note 9 My decision has been two fold, 1. cosmetic quality has gone down with Apple phones. i had purchased iphone X from hong kong and Iphone 8 plus from India , both phones had mild scratches on back glass and panel gaps(Glue sticking out between glass and stainless steel)/ brittleness in… Read more »

Don’t have much experience with iPhones since the last iPhone I used was iPhone 6; that too coz my father changed his phone as the fingerprint stopped working properly… But I find it kind of ridiculous to spend such a large amount of money on a smartphone… Recently I advised one of my friend to buy a OP6 & a 2 wheeler instead of iPhone X as his father was eager to give him money for that and he is quite happy now… Of-course, if you are in a professional Apple ecosystem, you need to buy an iPhone otherwise you… Read more »

IPhoneX are great but not at those prices. Reduced the prices to half and they will sell like hotcakes in India. SinceIPhones 7 series iPhones are really good. But prices are too high. Yes no customization. But it’s for niche customers who don’t want lag. But then S9+/Note 9/Google Pixel XL/2XL hardly lags. And nobody uses iPhone for So long to get that 5 year support. So Pixel and Notea are good. Even One Plus and Huawei phones are good.

Note 9 is selling well just due to prices of One Plus and IPhones this year.
