MTNL reports a standalone loss of Rs.718 crores in Apr-June 2016 quarter

Struggling PSU telecom operator, Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Ltd. today reported that their standalone loss was at Rs 718.02 crore in the April-June quarter this year down fro Rs 734.24 crore in the same period a year ago. The total income of MTNL from their two operational circles of Mumbai and Delhi also declined by 4.5 per cent to Rs 744.72 crore in April- June quarter from Rs 780.12 crore in the corresponding quarter of 2015-16.

Income from basic telephony and other services declined to Rs 612.74 crore in April-June 2016 from Rs 648.68 crore in the year-ago period. While revenue from cellular GSM services declined to Rs 163.01 crore from Rs 166.33 crore.

During the March - June quarter, the company added only 29587 new GSM subscribers while its nearest competitors added 3-5 times more new subscribers on their network. Though the company had 35,90,443 GSM customers on their network at the end of June, the VLR data shows only 61% of those connections are active.

In the wireline category, MTNL lost over 20,200 connections during the period and now has 34,38,888 active wireless connections.
