Mobile Handset Vendors Shipped 80 Million Units in Q3; Samsung Leads the Market With 22.1% Share

CMR India today released its Monthly Mobile Handset Market Review Report for Q3 2017. In the report, the research agency said that mobile handset vendors shipped a whopping 80 million mobile handsets in the country during the quarter, thanks to the festival sale period. The shipments include both smartphones and feature phones.

CMR India says that mobile handset vendors have shipped around 200 million mobile handsets since the start of 2017. "The smartphone market recorded 29% sequential growth in 3Q 2017, with 37.5 million units shipped, on the back of the festive season sales. Alongside, promotional offers on online and offline channels contributed to the growth," CMR India report said.

Talking about the highlights of the quarter, the shipments of global brands recorded 52% sequential growth in 3Q 2017, while Indian brands grew by 28%. At the end of the Q3, Chinese brands had a market share of 44%, while Indian brands had a 28% share.

During the quarter, 4G smartphone shipments grew sequentially by 37%, dominating the market with a 96% market share. In comparison, 3G smartphones saw a sequential decline of 27% in the same period. Also, the smartphone shipments of 13MP camera recorded 34% sequential growth in Q3 underlining the trend towards higher camera megapixels.

Talking about the leaderboard, Samsung remained the market leader with 22.1% market share and a sequential growth of 38% in Q3 2017. In Q3 2016, Samsung had achieved a 25% market share.

Next up in the list in Xiaomi with 84% sequential growth in Q3 2017 was at number two spot with 11% market share, on the back of online sales in the quarter, followed by itel with 9% market share at number three position. The highlight of this report is that Nokia made a return to the top 10 vendors, with its feature phones contributing the growth.

In the premium smartphone market (Rs. 26,000 to Rs. 50,000), Cupertino based Apple is leading the market with a share of 55%, followed by OnePlus and Samsung with 18% and 14% respectively. In the Super-premium smartphones segment (Rs. 50,000 and above), Apple still on top with 56% share, followed by Samsung and Sony with 43% and 1% share respectively.
