The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has asked Indian telecom operators including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to trial an anti-spam solution. This anti-spam solution comes from the Delhi-based Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL), a government-run body. TCIL has agreed to provide its anti-spam solution to the telcos for free for three months. During this time, the telcos will test the solution's effectiveness and give the government feedback on the solution developed by TCIL.

According to an ET report, TCIL has co-developed the SMS transparency solution in collaboration with an indigenous tech company. The aim is to help telcos in blocking spam or fraudulent messages. It is worth noting that Bharti Airtel has already launched and implemented its own anti-spam technology on the network which works in real-time and alerts users of suspicious communications (including both text and calls). BSNL has also announced a similar solution for its networks and showcased it during the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2024.

TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has been very focused on bringing measures that will contribute to reducing unsolicited commercial communications (UCC) in the country. As a result of the high volume of UCC, telcos have been quite ineffective in stopping spam communications. Mobile users have lost their hard-earned money due to fraudulent calls and these new solutions from the tech companies and the telcos are aimed at stopping spam calls or texts from reaching the customers in the first place.

To showcase the proof of concept (PoC) of its solution, TCIL earlier conducted a test on MTNL's (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited) mobile networks showcasing how the solution worked in stopping spam voice and data services in a live environment.
