Jio 5G Network Extends Handset Battery Life by Up to 40 Percent
Reliance Jio, India’s largest telecom operator, offers its 5G services under the “True 5G” brand, claiming to be the only operator currently providing 5G services via a standalone 5G (SA) network architecture that delivers gigabit speeds. This allows Jio 5G customers to benefit from reduced power consumption on their devices, resulting in up to 40 percent extended battery life. Kiran Thomas, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, explained these benefits during the Q2 FY25 earnings call. Thomas outlined other network advancements and innovations incorporated into the Jio True 5G network, which are discussed in more detail below.

Jio True 5G

First, Kiran explained why the company’s 5G network is called True 5G. Jio uses the term True 5G because it believes the network combines a unique mix of spectrum assets and advanced technical features, such as carrier aggregation and standalone (SA) architecture, making it distinctive not only in India but globally.

Beyond 5G SA, Jio has introduced additional technological innovations in its True 5G network. According to Kiran, these enhancements go “above and beyond” current large-scale deployments, as the company is “continuously growing the installed base of customers using Jio 5G services.” Beyond 5G SA, Jio has incorporated several additional technological innovations into its True 5G network, including:

1. True 5G Voice Calling

Jio has introduced what it calls True 5G voice calling, known as Voice Over New Radio (VoNR). Jio is working with most premium handset OEMs to ensure that their devices default to VoNR as the primary mechanism for voice calling whenever users are connected to the Jio 5G network. This means that, right out of the box, most users will experience voice over 5G, resulting in superior voice quality and faster call setup times.
