Global Internet Exchange (IX) operator DE-CIX has selected Nokia to upgrade its New York IX backbone network with 400 Gbps Ethernet infrastructure powered by Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS). The DE-CIX backbone will be upgraded and configured to potentially support 800GE in the future. It will also employ reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM) technology to enhance routing flexibility and accelerate incident response without service interruptions, according to Nokia.

Key Features of the Upgrade
The upgrade will deploy 400 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) technology and introduce a ring topology across 10 data centers housing DE-CIX infrastructure, Nokia said, adding, that the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), featuring dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM), will optimise the backbone’s efficiency by enabling automatic rerouting at the optical layer, reducing strain on the IP layer.
Thomas King, CTO of DE-CIX, said: “When we began planning the upgrade of our New York backbone, we wanted to simplify our network, while also increasing the resilience of the platform. We took a detailed look at the options in the market, and Nokia was the best choice for us.”
DE-CIX New York
