State-run telecom operator, BSNL has been looking to provide public Wi-Fi in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a long time now. The company now started offering free Wi-Fi in six locations of Hyderabad. BSNL says that they will be providing internet speeds of 4G plus to mobile users, irrespective of their network operator.
Residents of Hyderabad can use the public Wi-Fi from BSNL in six locations that include Kamineni Hospitals in LB Nagar, Koti, BSNL Office in Abids, District Treasury Office, Maitrivanam in Ameerpet, and in Gachibowli.
BSNL will be offering 100MB free data per day to all the users, and the users have to purchase data vouchers to access the internet beyond 100MB. The coupons range from Rs. 10 to Rs. 599 providing 100MB to 10GB data for 30 days. Recently, it was announced that a user could purchase a data voucher from nearby Kirana store and the denomination will be as low as Rs. 10, similar to the BSNL public Wi-Fi plan.
However, if you’re a BSNL mobile subscriber, the amount will be charged to your mobile number. If you use other networks, you will have to purchase the Wi-Fi voucher to refill data in your account.
It is also said that BSNL is closely working with local broadband operators in the city and will soon allow users to log in with their broadband credentials to enjoy high-speed data. However, it is still unknown whether only BSNL broadband users or every other broadband subscriber will be eligible to use their broadband data.
Currently, there’s no info on what speeds BSNL is providing with the public Wi-Fi. The government-owned telecom operator is looking to combat Reliance Jio by providing public Wi-Fi as the new entrant is offering free data to its customers in various places across Hyderabad via JioNet hotspot.
