The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), yesterday released the monthly telecom subscription data for June 2021. Looking at the data, ICICI Securities said that Bharti Airtel is showing promising recovery. The analyst signalled that while Airtel still hasn’t recovered from its loss in May 2021, the positive growth can’t be ignored nonetheless. As per the analyst report, both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel added 2.4 million active subscribers in June 2021. However, Airtel’s active subscribers' number is marginally more than Reliance Jio’s.

Bharti Airtel Has 344 Million Active Subscribers, What’s Jio’s Performance Here?

Bharti Airtel has a total of 344 million active subscribers out of its total subscriber base. As for Jio, the number of active subscribers in June 2021 stood at 340 million which is only 4 million behind from that of Airtel. Jio added 2.4 million active subscribers in June 2021 which is not a bad number, but it is lesser than the month of May 2021 where it had added 2.8 million active subscribers.

According to the analyst, the reason behind the declining trend in addition of active subscribers for Reliance Jio is the dipping excitement and interest around the JioPhone offer launched in March 2021.

As for Vodafone Idea, bad things continue to happen. Vi lost 4.9 million active subscribers in June 2021. The telco’s difficulties will keep on increasing if it can’t reduce the subscriber churn rate soon. Vodafone Idea’s total active subscriber base stood at 242 million in June 2021.

Bharti Airtel is staging a good recovery and might show better results in the month of July 2021. It is worth noting that during May, where Airtel had lost a large number of subscribers, India was battling through the second wave of COVID-19.

Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are expected to keep adding new customers while Vodafone Idea is expected to keep losing them based on the current market trends. This is because of Vi’s capped capacity for investing in its networks.
