Windows Phone Now India’s Second Largest Smartphone Platform – IDC Report

The IDC Asia Pacific Mobile Phone Tracker (April – June, 2013), released in August 2013 has revealed that for the third consecutive quarter, Windows Phone is the second most widely used smartphone platform in India. With a market share of 5.4%, Windows Phone has maintained its lead over competing platforms – namely, Apple iOS and Blackbery.

Windows Phone Now India’s Second Largest Smartphone Platform

In India, there are over seven Windows Phone devices available across a broad price spectrum. These include the Nokia Lumia 520, 620, 625, 720, 820, 920 and 925. Each of these Windows Phone offers Microsoft Office, Xbox Live, SkyDrive, Windows Phone Store, among others. Along with Nokia’s signature experiences such as Nokia Drive, Nokia Music and Nokia City Lens, Windows Phones deliver the best value.

India Smartphone Shipments by Operating System - 2012 Q1 and 2013 Q1

Vineet Durani, Director – Windows Phone Business Group, Microsoft India  said, “Less than ten months back, when we launched Windows Phone 8 in India, we had set ourselves the goal of being the second most widely used smartphone platform in India, and we are excited to have achieved this milestone so quickly.”

We have a great device line up, as well as an amazing app experience delivered through the Windows Phone Store. Together with the inherent strengths of the Windows Phone platform, the overall end-consumer experience is unique and immersive, which is driving this amazing uptake and will help us scale further,” he further commented.

  • SS September 19, 2013 8:31 am

I think Indian folks must be appreciated for this great step i.e. ditching apple and its crapPhone. People really have growing interest in Windows so we can see this result.

Are you a dumb to understand these things?

    • SS September 19, 2013 1:22 pm

      @waf

    • rajendra September 20, 2013 12:36 am

      @ss.
U always love to sit back of the Windows.. and look out side through it. u never understand whats the freedom u can enjoy from open source platform… come out of Windows… the gaint nokia has dropped its market share, and owned by Ms for just 7 billion dollers from nearly 120 billon dollers by choosing a wrong platform for their mobiles. it lacks many futures compared to andriod..
I really want to test some essential apps between windows and android.

      2.video player
      3.file manager
      4. rss reader

      10.current stock market,exchange rates,mutual fund values.
      11. online file storage

any app u mention for windows better than that app was found in andriod store

      • Deepak Chowdary September 27, 2013 12:31 am

1.There is WPtorrent which is a good torrent client and also bit torrent client is in private beta and will be released soon
2.The stock video player can play most of the format widely used what else you need to with a video player app
3.AGREE with that…lack of file manager is a CON
        4.Nextgen reader
5.Free SMS APP is there and has a gorgeous Ui and supports Way2sms 160by2,fullonsms and many other services.
6.We have mix radio,Pandora, spotify and nokia music
        7.chat clients??? I don’t get it
        8.IRCTC official App,red bus,PAYTM etc.,
9.Bing finance app never tried it though…
        10.skydrive,box (7 gb+5 gb free storage)

hope i have made it clear enough….WP has apps APPPS

        • Rajendra October 2, 2013 12:06 pm

WPtorrent not found in windows app store.. :-(
some of other torrent clients i have seen.. which needs accounts to use it and u can create an account after lot of struggle as i have noticed it was the apps saying failed to create account, even though u create an account it cant run in background. :-(

Stock video player cannot play most popular containers like mkv or avi.. :-(

Nextgen reader? what u can do nextgen reader? it doesn’t allow customized rss feeds. it is loaded whit some rss feeds. u cant add rss feeds from other sites

If you ask me the phone which you are using now is the best(according to me) anyways
    nokia lumia 620(windows)
    Sony xperia M(android)
    are my reccomendations.

  • karandeep singh September 18, 2013 6:54 pm

Currently I am using Nokia X2-01 and now I want to buy smartphone. please guide me guys among Android or Windows phone which is best. my budget is between RS10000-15000

    • Deepak Chowdary September 19, 2013 10:27 pm

just go for lumia 520 in windows phone 8 or xperia m in android…dont choose micromax or karbonn :)

  • Rama September 18, 2013 1:39 pm

    Really?
Well here are some reasons why windows phone is better than android
UI rendering:-UI Rendering is the rate at which the OS responds to the users input both ios and WP have high priority for UI Rendering, its only android which has low priority for UI rendering that was because android was built to compete with blackberry and was not at all meant to be used on touchscreen phones.Thats why no matter wheter you have an octa core processor or hecta core processor on you android device you would never find android as smooth as WP or ios.
RAM Hogger :- just try to run android jellybean on 512 mb of ram and WP8 on the same amount of memory and you would find out which os really sucks.
Security:- android is the most unsecure mobile OS to be on.According to a report more than 99% of the andoid devices can be easily affected my malware
piracy:- android is the worst when it comes to piracy more than 2/3 of the users of android dont even pay a single penny and enjoy all the apps.I know this wont affect you but just think about the developers.
Fragmentation:-Before commenting understand that fragmentation is a collective problem and depends on all versions of oses. Not everyone on earth owns a nexus.Justa few people owning a nexus would not solve the problem of fragmentation for developers.

And as far as usage patterns go windows phone is the fasest rising OS in the world.Windows phone shipments have increased by 77% in 2013 as compared to 2012

    • Rajendra September 18, 2013 3:24 pm

Nokia 1100 has also same advantages over andriod right?
Fast UI,less memory, free from malware,no piracy,no fragmentation… windows phones are a step back in time compared to andriod. they are not really smart phones

      • Rama September 18, 2013 6:35 pm

Thats why do i still use my nokia X2-01 which is based on symbian cheapest fastest best and no data tracking :D

    • madhu September 18, 2013 4:58 pm

Hey Do you Android , Apple Phones Based on Linux Karnel with the Java Development
Hence They are called OHA (Open Handset Alliance)So They have Highest Security,… even from Bluetooth to Network,…
      Where as BlackBerry also Same,..
But Depending up on them many apps are developed in android, apple Basically,..
Thats why they are Top sellers,.,.
But Windows phone support Less on OHA,… So they have less apps,..And they are not desigined on Lnux kernal,..so Windows Phones have Less Secuirty ,….hence they are based on windows os,…
You said about Mailware on android ,… some one will think ,..this will avaliable android on hacked android OS like if are upgrading your,,,. Phone or tablet with private or not Genuine os,…..
But thats not Mailware,.. its just that if you are upgrading 2.33 phone or tablet to 4.0 they will just hardware or pixels if you Upgrade them with genuine os Or Brandad Mobile there is no problem,..

  • Kishor Krishnan September 18, 2013 1:38 pm

    Well,

windows still suck in available free third party applications..

Windows phone is suitable for suckers who are first timers.

    ie,
who are updating from java/Symbian to (so called) windows phone.

In my opinion, Java or Symbian platform is far better than windows platform.,

    • Deepak Chowdary September 19, 2013 10:33 pm

dude i was a hard core android user(rooting, flashing new roms, under cloaking ,over cloaking) done a lot of stuff but after trying out WP in a store i fell in love with it at the first site…left android bought a lumia 720 and happy with its performance….you shuld try the WP once before commenting something dumb!!

  • Rama September 18, 2013 12:13 pm

I know what i am talking about so dont mention words like “Do you homework”.If you have eyes then read my comment and say where have i mentioned that microsoft is better.

  • SS September 18, 2013 1:49 am

    Hi Kavin

Sad to hear about your “unique” experience. Pls take a note of the following points.

    1. Equiliser seems a missing feature in Lumia 520 but microsoft promised to bring this via future updates.

    2. No video format support and blah blah- Dude, check out Windows store for some great players even though best are paid ones.

    3. People seemed to install 50 apps in his/her lumia so i cannot understand your theory.

    4. Restart- i never ever faced this problem, maybe a manufacturing defect or your mishandling.

    5. A lots of great reviews about lumia 520 and your comment really puzzles me.

    6. Again i call your experience to be unique one since WP market share is not growing magically, people are liking to use it.

    • vineet September 18, 2013 7:39 am

can you pl name some of video players for lumia520.

      • Deepak Chowdary September 19, 2013 10:35 pm

why do you even need a video player…stock player can handle most of the codecs

  • Vineet Singh September 18, 2013 12:48 am

I Love my Windows Phone 8S by HTC.

  • kavin September 17, 2013 10:33 pm

its my huge mistake to buy lumia..
it doesnot support most of video formats like mkv/ac3/flv
    it has no file explorer..
it cannot play songs except if it is in music folder not any other..
it cannot play songs by folder.. lists all songs in the music folder..
bing search bar irritates every time..
every application is alloted space by default.. so whether u use or not any application occupies space.. 8gb is filled with 12 applications.. no great games just loaded chat applications, mozilla.. space is gone…
no way u can install application to sd card..
    then whats good
    1. no hanging busssiness.. however if u open website with rich image.. phone will restart( android phone hangs( low ram models). u have to switch off and on.. here it automatically switch off and on thus saving u pain of off and on…)
    2. touch is good,. lumia touch response better than samsung s3..
3.internet speed is great.. websites loads better than s3..(same network i personally checked)
    4. great music quality.. amazingly excellent.. some what better than ipod( me using sony headset + lumia 520)… sadly it doesnot have equalizers… yet quality is too great to resist..

so, guys u want a dumb auto restart phone used for mp3, mild web browsing , little chat but no video watching opt for lumia..
want to watch great videos and software with no hang(android hangs with less than 1gb ram|) go for latest super amoled samsung or xperia phones..
remember windows phone is very dumb bcoz of no video support and music equalizers and memory capacity …
forget softwares.. u hardly use tons of software,
    lumia latest= android 2.1
may be after 5 years it may mature to compete android .. or may fail like windows vista..
iam great fan of nokia as well as i love windows 7 |(desktop)… but pity lumia..

  • Abdur Rehman September 17, 2013 6:15 pm

Microsoft is doing well and we hope WP would beat even Android in future might be after many years but it’s possible at least in hopes

  • Rama September 17, 2013 4:39 pm

When did i say google play does not support apps they support apps right from froyo……. all i want to say is that fragmentation is a headache for developers…. Froyo ics and gingerbread together account for 70% of all android devices on earth and google could discontinue support for rather all android oses except jelly bean and improve the quality of their os for both developers and comsumers after all what would google have to lose by discontuning support if android is completely free and google has no gains from it.But google would not discontinue support for gingerbread ics and froyo not beacuse THEY CARE FOR THEIR USERS(lol!!!) instead the reason why google would not discontinue support for devices running gingerbread ics froyo is because these os still run well on low end devices=low price mobile phones=mass market=more number of users on android=more people for google to track info from=adds to more number of people=more revenue for google.Dont ever think google is doing us a favour by making android available for free they make billions of dollars from us (users of google products right from their search engine to their mobile os android).if google really cared about the users of android they would make sure that atleast more than 80% of devices running android have the latest OS so that everyone could experience the best of android rather they simply develop the new OS and hand the responsibilty of updating the devices to manufacturers who again DONT CARE if your device belongs to the low end or mid range sector.

    • Rune September 18, 2013 7:05 am

You’re right in Android fragmentation. You’re not right, if you think Googles lack of interest in users means that then Microsoft must have an inverest in users. It’s not the way it works. Microsoft couldn’t care less for their users than Google for theirs. Both are in it for profit. Might I suggest you read up on the Vista scandal, and how Microsoft delberately lied to their users to sell their OS. And MS hasn’t changed since. At all. You think MS will not track you and your personal data? Just because they say so… or because they made that embarrassing Scroogled campaign? Why, then, does MS have an advertising company with target ads, and how can they DO targeted ads without spying? You know what targeted ads are… right?
Google… or BING, if you prefere… Microsoft targeted ads. And do your homework well.
Don’t be so incredibly naive. Both are evil, none care for their users. It’s profit what it is about. Money, and NOt users.
      Maaaan…
And I am perfectly satisfied with Android as a user. It does what it has to for my needs. No need to seek another evil and go to Windows, makes no differense. I have no illusions reagarding monopolies, Google OR Microsoft.

      • Prasenjit September 18, 2013 10:12 am

These are my words too. Android is going fine. No need to get entangled with WP. None is in the market to bestow goodies for nothing. They are not for charities.

      • Rama September 18, 2013 12:02 pm

        @rune
Nowhere in my comment have i mentioned the microsoft cares about their customers actually my comment wasnt even meant for the general it was a response to kavitas comment.None of these tech companies care about their users. All they care about is profits and margins and yes every advertising tech company company has a lot of info about their users

  • Sanjay September 17, 2013 4:38 pm

Only Nokia Lumia 520 is a hit phone and only because of its price @9500

    • aditya September 17, 2013 5:28 pm

      @sanjay
lumia 520 now available for 8500 only..

  • Arka Chatterjee September 17, 2013 3:20 pm

May be Android is at the top position now. It is just because of,till the end of 2012 there was no such competitor of Android, who can eat the market share of Android. But now WP8 is here. The whole scenario may be change in 1-2yr. Already in south-east Asia, Android is loosing it’s market share after Latin america and Africa and UK and WP market share is increasing significantly. iOS is static and Blackberry OS is almost lost in d Globe.
Nokia is rolling out Amber Update with Microsoft GDR2 update currently. And, we will see another update by d end of the year,as Nokia is already working on the Bittersweet Shimmer update (Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update) for Lumia devices. Some leaked pictures show that it is tested on Lumia 520. That menas, the GDR3 update will be available for all range of Lumia devices. it will enable 1920 x 1080 pixel native resolution support along with many more features.
I doubt, that, some Android fanboys are already starting to like Windows Phone 8 !! :)

    • Kavita September 17, 2013 3:50 pm

      @Arka
Would you kindly share the url, that andriod is losing share in SE Asia, latin america etc…. Would love to read it. Have googled across…. have only read about ios and blackberry losing share….

      • Arka Chatterjee September 17, 2013 5:44 pm

try Google “windows phone market share 2013″.

    • QU September 18, 2013 12:11 pm

“I doubt, that, some Android fanboys are already starting to like Windows Phone 8 !!”

I doubt you understand the difference between Android and Win Phone, open and closed ecosystem, Google and Microsoft, choice and Nokia, rooting and whatever, 90+% and 5.4% .

  • Bharat September 17, 2013 3:03 pm

Symbian (Nokia) was killed by Microsoft, just for the sake of Windows mobile OS. Now MS says that 10 months back they had targetted to be “second most widely used smartphone” ????? Gosh, you were No1.

  • beepX September 17, 2013 2:25 pm

please reduce the prices ! then sout more! :)

    • Rama September 17, 2013 3:38 pm

Nokia has the lowest margin amongst all smartphone makers.

    • Nokia September 18, 2013 12:14 pm

Please get a better job, or buy a Micromax.

  • madhu September 17, 2013 1:36 pm

Ya But Android is More than 20 times of all ,…
Android Gingerbread is equals to ICS and Jellybead,..
If KitKat and lime version released android then we will expect a better device already Samsung Note 3 relasing with Octa Quad Graphic processor and 3gb Ram,..
In Feb 2014 Samsung S5 and Sony Xperia Relaesing Devices 4gb Ram + (8)Octa core Processor,…
If its Happen Then we will Forget PC and Laptop Also,….

    • Rama September 17, 2013 2:42 pm

      @Madhu
Dont brag about android without any reason ……the fact that an equally large number of people use so many versions of android such as gingerbread, ice cream sandwich.jellybean(not jellybread) is called fragmentation and is one of the biggest weakness of android as it makes really difficult for developers to develop apps for android and that this problem is not present in ios is the also the reason why many apps are released first for ios and sometimes exclusively for ios even windows phone does not suffer from fragmentation as high as android does.

      • Kavita September 17, 2013 3:19 pm

        @Rama
        To set the record straight….
        1. Even with Andriod fragmentation, nearly all apps on google play support as far back as 2.3
        2. Fragmention in Windows OS (What a joke) surely does not exist, as Microsoft shutdown the marketplace for Windows OS 6 (I own LG Fathom). As a responsible company, they could at least offer exisiting old os apps!!!
        3. Apple and iOS, well, not everybody likes to be straight-jacketed.

@Madhu, Please do brag, if 80% of all smartphones run andriod. Not all of us can be that “ignorant”

        • Madhu September 18, 2013 5:01 pm

Ya what to do i am an android and apple os developer,..
I know why wondows have less sales,….

      • gsd September 18, 2013 12:13 pm

“even windows phone does not suffer from fragmentation as high as android does.”

Yet, it sucks and no one uses it. So its really screwed. If you are worried about fragmentation, get a Nexus.

      • Madhu September 18, 2013 5:03 pm

Hey why doy you brag with windows,… even,… windows,.. 8 Phone dont have much apps than android 2.3,…

  • SS September 17, 2013 1:17 pm

Months back, i just used to imagine the same to happen and its now true. I am really happy, don’t know why because iam neither a nokia nor a microsoft employee but a simple windows phone user (lumia 520).

Still more miracles to come, more great Lumias and we would see the excepted results.

    • Sandeep Kumar September 19, 2013 9:11 am

I have not used windows mobile but I have used Symbian and android. The biggest advantage of Symbian mobile is RAM management, simplicity in using and good hardware because I have been using e50 since 7 years but problem is that there are less application as compare to android. There is nothing to explore in this phone but can be easily flashed. In android there are a lot of applications but below 1GB ram android lags. There was heating problem in my Samsung s2. But only due to application there is something to explore unless there is nothing special in android and this is the field where windows phone lacks.
