Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Dish TV and Jio Oppose the Introduction of STB Interoperability

Set-Top Box interoperability is probably the next big thing in the Indian broadcasting sector. In November this year, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) issued a consultation paper on ‘Interoperability of Set-Top Boxes’ seeking views from the DTH, Cable TV and other stakeholders. DTH operators have responded to Trai’s ambitious Set-Top Box interoperability individually; Top DTH operators- Tata Sky, Dish TV, Airtel Digital TV and Reliance Jio believe that this is not the time to implement Set-Top Box interoperability in India. According to Tata Sky, it is not desirable to have interoperable STBs for the commercial, technical, security and service-related reasons, whereas Dish TV and Airtel Digital TV, also urged that there would be several technical limitations with interoperable STBs. Reliance Jio says that a successful implementation of interoperable STBs is difficult to cite as it requires a significant amount of commitment and investment from the operators.

What is Set-Top Box Interoperability in First Place?

Over the last few years, interoperable STBs have become a lot popular as it allows users to switch between different DTH or Cable TV operators without the requirement to replace the entire Set-Top Box. For example, you can switch from Tata Sky to Airtel Digital TV with ease if Trai implements the interoperable Set-Top Box service in India. Right now, if a DTH or Cable TV wants to shift to other service providers, then the entire equipment has to be installed from scratch. Interoperable STBs remove this hassle, and it will be available for DTH and Cable TV subscribers once it comes into effect.
