Samsung Exynos 7872 Chipset With Hexa-Core CPU, Mali-G71 MP1 GPU, and Cat. 7 LTE Modem Announced

South Korean smartphone giant, Samsung today officially announced its new mid-range chipset Exynos 5 series chipset, the Exynos 7872. This chipset features a hexa-core CPU, Mali-G71 MP1 GPU, and it is built on the 14nm manufacturing process. Going by the specifications, the Exynos 7872 is aimed at the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset. In fact, reports coming from China reveal that the Exynos 7872 SoC sourced higher benchmark scores than the Snapdragon 625 chipset.

The Exynos 7872 SoC consists of two Cortex A73 cores clocked at 2.0GHz, and other four Cortex A53 cores are clocked at 1.6GHz for better power efficiency. Samsung says that this new chipset delivers the top-notch performance of premium smartphones closer to mid-range devices. The single core performance is increased by two folds when compared to its predecessor, which helps in seamless multitasking.

The chipset is mated to Mali-G71 MP1 GPU, and it supports up to WUXGA (1920x1200) display resolution, meaning it doesn't support the trendy 18:9 display resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. Manufacturers can use LPDDR3 RAM module with this chipset and not LPDDR4, sadly.

The Exynos 7872 processor features an LTE modem that supports Category 7 with 2CA (Carrier Aggregation) for 300Mbps downlink speed and Category 13 with 2CA for 150Mbps uplink speed for faster yet reliable mobile communication. The modem also supports almost every network of 2G, 3G and 4G such as CDMA, GSM, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, LTE-FDD and LTE-TDD modes.

For global location positioning coverage, the processor embeds a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver. Other connectivity options include Wi-Fi, FM Radio, and Bluetooth 5.0. It also has support for eMMC 5.1 storage.

Talking about the camera specifications, the Exynos 7872 features an improved ISP (Image Signal Processor) and MFC (Multi-Format Codec, and supports 21.7MP camera module for both front and rear cameras. Furthermore, the ISP also enables a smartphone to feature an iris camera sensor up to 8MP for enhanced authentication.

The ISP also embeds a hardware block for Smart WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) that generates a WDR image with just a single shot. The MFC supports full HD video encoding and decoding at 120fps with HEVC (H.265) and H.264 codec.

The first smartphone to make use of this Exynos 7872 chipset is the Meizu M6S smartphone, which was released yesterday. Also, many other Samsung upcoming mid-range models are expected to feature the same chipset.
