Samsung unveiled their latest flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ at their Unpacked event with a promise of a “reimagined” camera experience. Samsung has indeed lived up to its promise as French imaging company DxOMark proclaimed that Galaxy S9+ has the best mobile camera ever. The Galaxy S9+ camera set a new a record in DxOMark’s benchmark tests with an overall score of 99, the highest ever rating for a smartphone. The previous leader was the Google Pixel 2 with a score of 98, followed by the iPhone X with a score of 97. To recall, Samsung older flagship the Galaxy S8 scored an overall 94.
The new Galaxy S9+ performed very well in all of the DxOMark tests, and they even added that it “is a smartphone without any real weaknesses in the camera department.”
DxOMark praised the Galaxy S9+ camera performance, especially in low light conditions. The benchmarking site said that Samsung had achieved a very good balance between noise reduction and retention of detail on all light levels. The S9+ scored a record 104 in photo taking, while it scored a 91 in the video department.
The Galaxy S9+ is Samsung’s first Galaxy S flagship series to sport dual camera setup. The S9+ comes with a two 12MP sensors, a wide angle and a telephoto lens.
The biggest feature, however, is the Dual Aperture or variable aperture that allows the primary lens to switch between f/1.5 to f/2.4 depending on lighting conditions. Samsung says this allows S9 to capture 28 percent more light than the Galaxy S8’s camera.
The other headline feature of Galaxy S9+ camera is the Super Slo-Mode. This feature allows the S9 to shoot slow motion videos at 960 frames per second at up to 720p resolution. There is also a Motion Detection feature that will detect motion in a selected frame and will automatically record it at 960fps.
Lastly, the Galaxy S9+ gets an additional feature like Live Focus and bokeh filters. This feature uses the secondary telephoto lens to identify the depth and shoots portrait mode. You can also manually adjust the level of blur before you capture the shot.
By the looks of DxOMark’s findings, if you are looking for the best phone for photo taking capabilities, the Galaxy S9+ is the best phone out there.
