Nokia smartphones are known for software updates and HMD Global wants to keep up on that aspect. Google recently released a new brand identity for Android, saying that the upcoming Android Q will be called just Android 10 without any dessert name. While Google did not reveal when it’s going to rollout stable version of Android 10 to Pixel smartphones, HMD Global went ahead and released a roadmap of Android 10 update for Nokia smartphones. According to HMD Global, 17 Nokia smartphones released in the last couple of years will receive Android Q or Android 10 update by Q2 2020. The first Nokia smartphones to receive the update would be Nokia 8.1, Nokia 9 PureView and Nokia 7.1, whereas the last ones in this cycle would be Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1, Nokia 5.1 and Nokia 1.
Which Nokia Smartphone Will Receive Android 10 Update First?
When it comes to rolling out software updates on time, no other manufacturer can beat HMD Global. We all know OnePlus rolls out the software updates first to its smartphones, but OnePlus’ product catalogue is very limited and it will be limited going forward as well. That’s not the case with HMD Global as the manufacturer has managed to push Android P update to more than 15 smartphones- something which no other brand in the industry has done.
Now, HMD Global is all geared up for Android 10 release to the Nokia smartphones. The Finnish upstart company says HMD will release the update first to Nokia 8.1, Nokia 9 PureView and Nokia 7.1 in Q4 2019. Followed by these phones, the Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 6.1 will get the update sometime in early 2020. In Q1 2020, HMD Global promises to release Android 10 update to seven smartphones including Nokia 2.2, Nokia 3.1 Plus, Nokia 3.2, Nokia 4.2, Nokia 1 Plus, Nokia 5.1 Plus and Nokia 8 Sirocco. Lastly, in Q2 2020, the Nokia 2.1, Nokia 3.1, Nokia 5.1 and Nokia 1 will get the update.
At the IFA 2019 tech show, HMD Global is expected to release at least two smartphones- the Nokia 7.2 and the Nokia 6.2, and both of them are expected to come out with Android 9 Pie itself. So chances are that these two phones will also get the update first alongside the Nokia 8.1, Nokia 9 PureView and Nokia 7.1.
HMD Global to Rollout Quarterly Security Updates to Older Phones
In a surprising piece of news, HMD Global also confirmed that it would be rolling out quarterly security updates to Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 for another one year. Already, the company has updated all the four phones with two major Android iterations, and in the third year, it’s planning to provide quarterly security updates. To recall, the Nokia 8 was the company’s flagship phone launched back in 2017 with Android Nougat on board. Later on, it was updated to Android 8.0 Oreo, Android 8.1 Oreo and Android 9 Pie. While it may not receive the Android 10 update, it will at least get security updates every three months.
