While smartphones this year have all been about notches and dual camera setups, the chipsets and processors have also definitely progressed a lot in terms of technology and architecture. Owing to this phenomenon, we are getting to see a lot of chipsets out there boasting of immense power efficiency and AI prowess. Another such mid-range and budget segment chipset manufacturer is MediaTek. Now, the Taiwanese manufacturer has launched its new SoC for mid-range phones, the MediaTek Helio P90. This takes the P series of chipsets from MediaTek forward and becomes the flag bearer of the processors' line-up ahead of the Helio P60. As per the company’s claims, the new Helio P90 comes with a 15% better performance over its predecessor and also sports the Fusion AI architecture which will boost the AI based functions on the smartphone.

Fusion AI Architecture and 12nm Fabrication Process

Going by the claims of the company, the Fusion AI architecture will boost the functions on the phone like AI scene recommendations and object recognition. The Helio P90 will also power other features inspired by the flagship level phones like intelligent noise reduction and light balancing in low light scenes. The new SoC is also expected to better the Face Unlock performance on mid-range phones.

Talking about the setup of the MediaTek Helio P90, the chipset features a two-cluster, eight-core configuration which consists of dual Cortex-A75 cores clocking up to 2.2GHz and six Cortex-A55 clocking speeds of up to 2GHz. The graphics on the chipset are handled by PowerVR GM9446 GPU, which is sourced from the previous-Apple licensee, Imagination Technologies. The SoC also extends support for up to 8GB of LPDDR4X memory, and for UFS 2.1 standard secure storage. The company has also asserted claims that the P90 will be able to handle 48MP camera sensors or dual camera setup split into arrangements of 24MP and 16MP. What’s more is that the Helio P90 will be able to take on video shots at 480fps. Another thing to note is that although the Helio P90 does not come with 5G support, it does come with dual VoLTE support.

Next Mid-Range Chipset from MediaTek

As per our expectations, we will be witnessing the Helio P90 power operations in the phones under the range of Rs 30,000. Beyond that, the phones are not expected to come with Helio P90 since there are certain apparent limitations on performance, imaging, and connectivity with this SoC. Unlike the other chipsets from Qualcomm which boast of strong performance and cutting-edge graphics, the Helio P90 is a strictly mid-range catering SoC. However, given the pricing limitations, the Helio P90 will definitely be a step up from the predecessor.
