Makedonski Telekom (MKT), part of the Magyar Telekom Group, has installed North Macedonia's first-ever submarine fiber optic cable. The 1-kilometer-long cable, submerged in Lake Debar, enhances the existing network infrastructure across a 6.32 sq km area in the region, providing the potential for more base stations and connection points, the telco said.

Significant Network Enhancement
The company stated that this effort, completed with the assistance of professional divers, marks a significant advancement in Macedonia's connectivity.
"Obstacles bring challenges, but we know the pathway to the solution through alternative methods without disturbing the natural environment. In the future, we will continue exploring new ways to use the country's water surfaces to lay safe submarine fiber optic cables," Makedonski Telekom said.
Future Plans
Makedonski Telekom plans to continue expanding its fiber optic network across Macedonia, emphasising its mission to connect the entire country.

As of March 2024, MKT has a market share of around 48 percent in the mobile market, with approximately 1,266,000 subscribers. In the fixed service segment, the telco holds a market share of 62 percent with around 229,000 customers at the end of the first quarter of 2024.
