Reliance Jio recently changed its base prepaid plan for the consumers. A couple of days back, TelecomTalk reported about the removal of the Rs 119 plan from Jio throughout the country. Now, the telco's new base prepaid plan is the Rs 149 option. For JioPhone customers, there are more affordable plans available, but if you are a regular Jio customer, then you have to recharge with the Rs 149 plan to keep your benefits active. It is also worth noting that this plan does not qualify for the 5G Welcome Offer that comes with unlimited 5G data.
Reliance Jio has made the move likely to boost its bottom-line revenues. The telco has been struggling to improve its average revenue per user (ARPU) figure for quite some time. At the end of Q1 FY24, Jio's ARPU was Rs 180.5. Jio has 400+ million active users. However, a large proportion of its users are on low-cost recharges or JioPhone plans, which doesn't help Jio in increasing its ARPU. However, the telco will likely benefit from the removal of the Rs 119 plan in terms of ARPU. Whether it would slow down subscriber addition is something time will tell.
