Ahead of RCOM CDMA shutdown across the country, Jio 4G on 850MHz spectrum has started going live in many locations across Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Jio currently does not hold any spectrum 850MHz band in Kerala, Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Rajasthan. However, has entered into spectrum sharing agreement with RCOM to use its 850MHz.
At one particular location in Kottayam, Kerala we got Jio 4G signal on 850MHz spectrum for few minutes. However, the speeds were very low and signal soon switched to other bands. At the same time one of our readers from Coimbatore, Tamilnadu also reported about Jio 4G on 850MHz. The signal strength was very strong at 59-65db and he got speeds of 17Mbps. Jio 4G 850MHz signals is also said to be live at Bangalore.
At the time of writing this story RCOM CDMA network is still live in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. This may be due to the fact that RCOM now has access to MTS CDMA network in these circle, who is in process of merging itself with RCOM. However, EVDO service is said to have stopped working and only CDMA 1X is available for RCOM CDMA users in these circles.
RCOM had liberalized its entire 850MHz holding across 16 circles and is process of shutdown its CDMA network ahead of 4G launch. Earlier Jio had bought airwaves in nine circles from RCOM and entered into spectrum sharing deal in 17 circles. Later, RCOM liberalized the spectrum in fours more circles of Rajasthan, Tamilnadu, Kerala and Karnataka, where auction determined price were not available.
