DoT to ensure un-disrupted services in the event of Cyclone Nilofar

By October 29th, 2014 AT 9:55 PM

Cyclone Nilofar, categorised as “severe” by weather forecasters, is expected to hit the western state of Gujarat during the “next 24-48 hours”.

Department of Telecom (DoT) has warned various operators about the services in the targeted areas viz districts of Kutch, Jamnagar, Junagarh and Porbandar and advised them to share infrastructure through intra-circle roaming arrangements for 15 days. DoT also advised operators to set up call center in Gujarat with helpline number 1948 where people could call to trace missing persons and other services.

In a letter dated October 27, DoT said- “All access providers are hereby directed to take steps for immediate maintenance and restoration of telecommunication facilities in these areas and to facilitate the knowledge of well being of relatives in these areas.” Some Operators ‘may’ include free services and call centre in the prone areas like they did in the recent hazards viz. Hudhud and the recent Jammu and Kashmir floods.

“Endeavour shall be made to provide wi-fi hotspots in relief camps being organised by respective state government on the lines of facilities provided during recent J&K floods” DoT added.

happy to here the news. Atleast they warned now. I am severely affected by cyclone hud hud. I am using airtel postpaid and still i am unable to use airtel signals in vizag as their towers are collapsed 90 percent. Happy that airtel allowed to latch on idea, voda, and bsnl. But cals are connecting after 2 to 3 attempts and unable to use data. I REQUEST DOT TO ALLOW DATA ALSO ON OTHER NETWORKS.

Today I suddenly received a text message from Aircel saying “If you are unable to reach out to your loved ones in Gujarat during cyclone call 1948.For State Govt.Helpline add STD code with 1077 or call 1070”.I think Aircel will take a very hardcore step to help out the people of Gujarat after the cyclone. It is informing its customer about the helpline numbers in advance.

Received this message on my idea number as well.
Aircel is the least used network in Gujarat with absolutely no coverage at all even at the outer parts of the cities, let alone rural or cyclone effected areas, complete fail.
