C-DOT and IIT Bombay Collaborate on Optical Transceiver Chipset for 6G Wireless Links
The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), the R&D centre of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT Bombay) to develop an "Optical Transceiver Chipset for High-Bandwidth 6G Wireless Links." This agreement is part of the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) initiative, under the DoT, aimed at advancing 6G technologies in India.

6G Ecosystem and Research Focus

"This call for proposal is for accelerated research on 6G Eco-system, to lead in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030 on the pillars of Affordability, Sustainability, and Ubiquity," the Ministry of Communications said on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Focus on Rural and Remote Areas

The project will focus on creating high-bandwidth free-space coherent optical links for 6G applications, such as providing high-speed connectivity in rural areas and challenging terrains where fiber deployment is difficult. It will also explore satellite-based solutions for uninterrupted communication in remote locations.

The agreement was signed in a ceremony attended by Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT; Professor Shalabh Gupta from IIT Bombay; and C-DOT directors Pankaj Kumar Dalela and Shikha Srivastava.
