Australian telco TPG Telecom has joined forces with MediaTek and Nokia to showcase live 360-degree video broadcast using 5G. The demonstration, hosted at Nokia's 5G Futures Lab in Sydney, Australia, showcased the capabilities of Advanced 5G Technology powered by TPG Telecom's commercial 5G network, Nokia's 5G Uplink Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology, and MediaTek's advanced 5G mobile chipset.

The technology used for this showcase includes TPG Telecom's commercial 5G network, MediaTek's 5G mobile chipset technology, specifically the MediaTek M80 5G modem and Nokia's 5G Uplink Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology.

Capabilities

Nokia's CA technology optimizes 5G uplink speeds by combining multiple sub-6 GHz frequency bands, enabling real-time transmission of high-quality 360-degree video. The demo utilized Nokia's energy-efficient AirScale portfolio, including baseband, massive MIMO, and Remote Radio Head products powered by ReefShark chipset. Additionally, the demo included MediaTek's 5G mobile platform, specifically the M80 5G modem.

Spectrum Combination

A combination of a 15 MHz carrier on the 700 MHz band (n28) and a 90 MHz carrier on the 3.6 GHz band (n78) was used to achieve a peak uplink throughput of 159 Mbps. The demonstration showcased how this technology can transform TV, movie, and sports viewing experiences.

Use Cases

The demonstration highlighted the potential of 360-degree video live streaming over 5G. The use case discussed included scenarios like remote control of robots in hazardous environments through VR headsets.
