Major Malaysian operators have decided to acquire stakes in the state-owned wholesale 5G operator, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), following discussions with the authorities regarding equity and access to 5G network. Malaysia’s 5G Network Implementation Task Force has successfully reached an agreement on equity participation in DNB.

The task force, jointly chaired by the Chief Secretary of the Treasury and the Secretary of the Ministry of Communications and Digital, has been actively working towards advancing the country’s 5G infrastructure.
Telcos Invest in 5G Expansion
According to the press release issued by the Minister, shared widely on social accounts, Key telecommunications players, including Celcom Digi, Maxis, Telekom Malaysia, U-Mobile, and YTL Communications, are finalizing the shareholding process with DNB.

Achieving 80 Percent 5G Coverage by 2023
The collaboration aims to support the development of DNB’s 5G network, to achieve 80 percent coverage in populated areas by the end of 2023. However, the release didn’t contain details of the stakes each operator agreed to or planned to take.
Subsequently, the network will transition to a dual network model, expected to begin as early as January 2024 as reported by TelecomTalk. The statement noted that service providers involved are committed to taking all necessary governance actions to ensure a smooth and efficient process.
