After a short period of beta testing Android Oreo on the Mi 6, Xiaomi is finally rolling out the stable version of Oreo update to the device. The latest MIUI 9.2.3 Global Stable ROM brings Android 8.0 Oreo to the Mi 6 along with a ton of bug fixes. The rollout of the MIUI 9.2.3 Global Stable ROM was first announced on the MIUI Official Forum. Alongside the full changelog of the update, the announcement details the methods to install the latest MIUI version.
The stable Oreo firmware for Mi 6 is available as an over-the-air (OTA) release and also as a downloadable package. Users with the Xiaomi Mi 6 smartphone can check for the update availability by heading over to Settings>About Phone>System Updates. If there's no update pending, then it should reach in upcoming days.
Alternatively, you can manually update your smartphone either via flashing using the Fastboot Method or Recovery ROM method. You’ll have to visit MIUI Forums to download the firmware files. However, this method requires you to backup your entire data to a microSD card as it erases all data contained on your phone.
In terms of major features included on the MIUI 9.2.3 update, it brings some core Android Oreo features to Mi 6 including Picture-in-Picture (PiP) and Smart AutoFill and as well the February Android Security Patch.
The update also brings Redesigned Home Page, updated Peach Blossom and Asphalt themes and new animated icons for selected apps in the default theme. It includes updated Contacts app which comes with improved layout and readability in search results. There are several optimisations for preloaded Dial Pad, Recents section, Notification alerts, Swipe gestures and Folders.
To recall, Mi 6 was Xiaomi's 2017 flagship smartphone launched with Qualcomm’s top range Snapdragon 835 SoC, 6GB of RAM and dual camera setup. The smartphone came sporting a 12MP telephoto + 12MP wide angle lens on the rear and 8MP selfie shooter. Packing 64GB and 128GB storage onboard, the Mi 6 was backed by a 3350mAh battery.
With Mi 6 now on Android Oreo, it wouldn’t be long before the Chinese phone maker brings Oreo to other Xiaomi devices.
