HMD Global May Launch a Nokia Smartphone With Penta-Lens Camera at the End of 2018

Nokia stunned the smartphone industry and photography enthusiasts in 2012 with the launch of Nokia 808 PureView, the world’s first phone to feature an incredible 41MP camera. Now it seems HMD Global seeks to continue the legacy, as a new flagship is said to be in the making with a Penta-lens or 5 lens camera. The information comes from a source working with Taiwan based contract manufacturer Foxconn’s R&D business. The source claimed that HMD Global is closely working with Foxconn to launch new Nokia smartphones.

The source claimed that HMD has already prepared a smartphone with a Penta-lens camera so that it can be tested. The source adds that the Finnish company failed to start the mass production of the upcoming device, but it could see the light of the day if Foxconn finds the solution to mass produce it. The device is expected to launch at the end of 2018.

The Penta-Lens camera will have a circular form factor at the rear with seven holes in the middle which completes a circle. The circular housing will feature five cameras and 2 LEDs. It will look very much like a shower head similar to the Nokia OZO VR camera.

There are, however, no details about the type of lenses and the purpose of having five cameras on the back. It is likely the smartphone will be very powerful, and the cameras could serve the purpose of augmented reality or virtual reality apps or games.
