Ex-Nokia employees created Jolla after Nokia abandoned its ingenious operating system for the Microsoft’s Windows Phone. Earlier in July, the Finnish smartphone company Jolla announced its plan to enter the Indian markets with Sailfish OS powered smartphones. The company even tweeted to confirm the India launch through an exclusive tie-up with the e-commerce website Snapdeal. After two months, the device has finally made it to the Indian shores and will be up for grabs exclusively on Snapdeal at a price tag of Rs 16,499.
The Jolla smartphone features a button-less design, and the Sailfish OS for gesture-centric user experience. The main focus of Sailfish OS is on multi-tasking without the need to go in and out of apps. As is it is becoming general nowadays, there is also a spotlight on gestures for easy navigation and selection of content.
The phone sports a 4.5-inch 960 x 450 display, 8-megapixel main camera and a 2-megapixel front camera and 16GB of internal storage. The phone is powered by a 1.4GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and is backed by 1GB RAM. It has a replaceable 2100mAh battery, which, as claimed by Jolla, provides up to 10 hours of talk time. The phone is available in Poppy Red, Keira Black and Aloe colours.
Even though Jolla isn't based on Android, it can still run Android apps so that users don’t miss majority of apps which they already use in their day-to-day lives. Marc Dillon, COO and Co-Founder of Jolla went on to claim that Android apps will run better on a Sailfish OS than on Android itself. Other features include Live multitasking, which enables users to use various apps simultaneously and a unique interface that supports new gestures such as peek and pull.
Interestingly, today is the day when Xiaomi has sold 60,000 Redmi 1s units on Flipkart. Both Snapdeal and Flipkart would be in the spotlight today. However, unlike, other budget-phone makers entering the Indian market, the Jolla smartphone is debuting at a higher price of 16,499.
