Smartphone cameras are replacing the dedicated digital point and shoot cameras big time. The performance on offer is almost identical but not quite like them since you do not get optical zoom capabilities in the smartphones. Samsung has just launched the successor of the S4 Zoom in the form of Galaxy K Zoom which is a camera centric device combining smartphone capabilities in it. It will be a niche device as the demand for such devices is still in its nascent stages. Let us take a look at what the S4 K Zoom has to offer.

  • It has a hexa-core Exynos 5260 processor (2 x 1.7 GHz Cortex A15 + 4 x 1.3 GHz Cortex A7), Mali-T624 GPU
  • 2GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot up to 64GB
  • Android 4.4 KitKat, TouchWiz UI
  • 20.7MP rear camera, 1/2.3 inch BSI CMOS sensor, Xenon Flash, OIS and 10x optical zoom lens
  • 2MP front-facing camera

  • Charcoal Black, Shimmery White and Electric Blue colour options

The smartphone comes as a rival to the likes of Lumia 1020 and 1520 but is a mid ranger instead. It can do well if priced right (say around the Rs 20,000-25,000 mark) when it launches in India. The phone is aimed squarely at photography buffs and will get their job done pretty easily. Would you be interested in buying a device that can act as your primary digital camera as well as a smartphone? Or will you prefer buying camera accessories like Sony QX-10 or QX-100 to pair up with your current smartphone? Let us know in the comments below.
