Tata Docomo Revises 3G Data Packs

Tata docomo today announced the launch of all new range of affordable and easy to understand tariff plans for its 3G services. These changes in the 3G were brought after Aircel, Airtel, !dea, BSNL, MTNL & Vodafone revised its 3g tariff plans.

Tata Docomo also introduced a different concept where in on doing Second recharge of Rs 4 customer use to get 1GB of data free. Few 3G packs have been discontinued like Rs 9 or 11, Rs 201 or Rs 203.

Tata Docomo did these changes after looking at the market penetration of 3g packs in other operator which was a success. What do you think is these packs still affordable compared to other operators 3g pack? Do share your comments.

Why am I not able to get 3G outside my area? I get garbage 3G in Bhiwandi but I get it anyways, but outside Bhiwandi even in Kalyan I don’t get 3G on data service from docomo.

I can’t figure it out, I get 3G roaming on my Vodafone but I’m sick and tired of docomo, this is my last try before I move to Vodafone for my datasim.

    kan :
Please reconfirm with customer care regarding Rs. 5/- with 50Mb plan, its not 3g. its for 2g data only.
I have asked with CC they told if you get sms for this scheme then only you will get 3g speed, else it will be 2g data.
for activation of this plan you have to dial in MH/Goa circle *141*1705#

You are right. I dont know why they are showing Rs. 5 plan under 3G. When you dial *141#, you can see Rs. 5 under 3G….Stupids. They are just confusing customers.

  • kan July 10, 2012 3:40 pm

For RS 246/- plan (3G smart life)
1)Please recharge with STV (special tariff recharge)
2)After that dial *141*15# for get 1gb 3g data (Only once dial this number)
or do EVD recharge of Rs 4/- (once)
    3) Check data balance by *111*1# (then select 6th option Pool balance) or *191#
    This steps for MH/Goa circle

Docomo must provide multiple internet balance account like airtel provides. We Monthly 2G internet pack customers can’t go for 3G while having 2G pack. In case we activate 3g while having 2G pack balance, The 2G pack balance lapse and get loss of it with validity. So DOCOMO wont get 2G internet customers active more on 3G with packs.

    @sajjad ahmed

I confirmed before post. Go to docomo website and recharge. This is not a pack its just a talktime recharge.

BSNL EVDO speed is 2.4mbps in most area. But if there are more users the speed is split. You get less than 1mbps most time.

In case of 3G it is 21mbps and split will not matter.

  • sajjad ahmed July 4, 2012 12:48 am

today I visit Tata shop n they confirm thad there is no more 246 packs available in karnataka now . so kindly confirm before post.
can anyone tell when will cdma players like mts,Tata, reliance provide truly unlimited without any fup or cap like BSNL EVDO provides for rs 825. bsnl evdo doesn’t have the coverages like others do?

no need to do anything just put it on wcdma only in mobile network settings & recharge 2g pack .it automatically gives u 3G speed.but before recharge time don’t put ur mobile on automode which is our by default setting.dont worry if u put ur mobile on gsm only,.if uput that then after recharge put on wcdma only.

Hello maddy, i am frm assam, and is the trick is available only in android mobile, or it is also available in normal 3G handset. Nw m using sumsung 3G C5010

it perfectly work on every device. I said that wcdma only because that settings on android device.i think on Nokia that is umts only. in every device there is 3 settings in mobile network first automode second gsm only(2g) & 3rd wcdma only(on Nokia it UMTS ) so by default our settings is automode so change it on wcdma only.
first confirm 3G is activated on ur card. it put it on gsm only or umts only & then recharge it.but after recharge put on umts only.
whatever ur mobile there will be 3 settings & name will be different .so avoid first automode & put on any other settings gsm or umts & recharge it.
I am only using android phone so I don’t know settings on other phone.but defiantly there will be 3 settings.

no if u r in circle then no need to worry.but if u gone outside from that moment it gives u normal speed & this trick never work on that card.but if u inside it doesn’t matter period ucan use unlimited period but if u go outside on first day after week or later month from that moment it will not work.
on my this card I am using from last 2 month & recharge of 5 times 270 plan & it still working.

    Maddy ,
Earlier i brought a bsnl sim and nw i am using it. I am getting a download speed around 250kbps ie(around 35KB/s). But i didnt covert my sim to 3G. Should i need to convert my sim to 3G to get 3.6Mbps speed by using 2g plan.

yes first u need to convert to 3G & then recharge it.i think now a days all cards are 3G activated so just put ur mobile on wcdma only( android) & recharge.but don’t go outside the circle.i am from Maharashtra so here highest recharge is 270 for 10 gb.& it perfectly give me 3G speed I am living in Hyderabad.
Whenever I bought a new card I am not using there when I come to Hyd I start it with this trick & absolutely work for me from 8 month.
Iso whenever u buy new card just stay inside bsnl circle.& don’t put ur card off for 2-3 days.
I am using galaxy s2,iPad my laptop & without 3G this phone is nothing.

In kerala, all 2G packed are activated by SMS only. Also when 3G is activated 2G all packs get cancelled. They even change plan to 3G special. So will not work in kerala.

But i can get full time 250kbps speed with 2G pack and switch to 3G mode.

BSNL is also doing the same for landline subscribers of kerala. When check usage they tell unbilled usage which include Free calls and free usage of Broadband. Free calls remaining cannot be checked at all. I had to calculate free calls and free usage of BB to know whether I exceed or not.

friends on ur sim recharge with 2g plan & get 3G Trust me
first get new 3G card or activate to 3G & Then recharge with 2g plan.it will work 100% trust me.
    but follow some rules.
on any recharge it will give u3.6 Mbps speed(225-250 downloading) just put ur mobile on wcdma only no need to change settings on recharge time.
this trick only work for ur sim only once.when u go outside the circle or in roaming then it will not work on ur card
so if u already use this trick on ur regular sim then it is not work on ur sim for lifetime so get a new card & activate it to 3g then use it.
u can use it in ur 3G circle but don’t go outside bsnl circle otherwise remaining data will be converted into 2g.if it happen then get a new card & use it . u can use it for day’s ,months or years u will be get 3G speed on every recharge but don’t go outside the circle.
trust me guys in this practical I waste my 6 card.
but if ur from metro cities then it is easy to u to use it .

    @Saurabh

    Thanks for the information.

So how much speed we can expect on the upcoming 700mhz 4G spectrum?

  • Tharun George July 2, 2012 5:48 pm

    @Tharun George

    It is not Rs 35 – 40 + Rs 4.

I tried to tel “During the 2nd, 3rd etc you spend (Rs 35 to 40) + Rs 4 for 1GB with 30 days validity.”

  • Tharun George July 2, 2012 5:44 pm

    @Spiderman
    I will explain.

    1. Recharge for Rs 246 at Docomo site as 3G recharge. (Select this Rs 246 pack from given options)

    2. Then recharge for Rs 4 at docomo site as 3G recharge. (Select this Rs 4 pack from given options)

    3. Now Top up and make you balance Rs 246 or above.

    4. After using up the 1GB. Repeat step 1 but choose payment method as “Pay by using your current balance” at docomo website.

    5. Repeat step 2 get 1GB again.

    6. Go to step 3 and continue in loop.

So at first you spent Rs 246 + Rs 4 to get 1GB for 1 month.
    During the 2nd, 3rd etc you spend Rs 35 – 40 + Rs 4 for 1GB with 30 days validity.

Docomo is getting only Rs 4 for 1GB 3G, while the Rs 35 is paid as service tax for 246 recharge.

Very nice trick thanks to @Ramesh Darji

  • Tharun George July 2, 2012 5:30 pm

    @Spiderman

One of my friend got the sms. I told about it to my another friend who always use 3G, but didn’t received the sms. He did Rs 91 and got 1GB. He also check with Docomo office in aluva last week, they also said offer is available.

I think this offer may to kerala only. You can try recharge for Rs 91 which gives 200MB. If you get offer you will get extra 824MB in 48 hours.

  • Saurabh July 2, 2012 4:55 pm

@Tharun George. Download the file from link below. It contains all the info. regarding each company having spectrum in different bands in all circles,

    sendspace.com/file/m7aet18

As far as speed is concerned, it is right that 1800MHz is capable of carrying more data than 900MHz but for low bandwidth services like GPRS/EDGE, it don’t make much difference. But it does make difference in case of 3G.

As I told before, here in Haryana Idea and Vodafone have spectrum in 900MHz band and their EDGE speed is always more than 200+ Kbps but Airtel is having spectrum in 1800MHz band in Haryana but their speed in last 6 years never crossed 8kB/s or 64Kbps mark.

BTS operating on 900MHz can carry signals either data or voice to larger distance than 1800MHz. So both have their pros and cons.

How 10 GB from 300 Rs ?? You mean to repeat the recharge process for 10 times using tata docomo site ? I’ve heard like if suppose 1 GB is active on your number & if you do again recharge for any other pack, your remaining data balance will get forfeited & data bal & validity gets replaced with that of the new plan !! Pls clarify

Also how u doing 4 Rs recharge ? using docomo site or any other website ? what kind of recharge I need to do topup/special or 3G smartlyf ? soo complicated

  • Tharun George July 2, 2012 3:29 pm

    Ramesh Darji :
Dear Friends, let me share you cheapest plan of Tata docomo, which is not in above. Recharge with 246 and than immediately with Rs. 4. you will get 1 GB data and Rs. 219 talktime. So effective rate is Rs. 30. Now, if some one dont want to use the talk time, than make your total balance of Rs. 250 by recharging with balance amount. Go to Tata docomo site, and select the payment option of Rs. 246 from your own balance rather than thru credit card. So every time you can use your own balance and that way you will get 10 GB data from Rs. 300. Howz Idea, I am using this way frind, till Docomo with draw such scheme enjoy. If you recharge with 300 you will get 330 balance which you can use for activating 246 plan. This way, actually it is free of cost. So share with your frnds and enjoy

You are right it is possible. Thanks for sharing.

In kerala Docomo offers 1GB for Rs 91 as promotional offer. 200MB + 824MB within 48 hours.

  • Tharun George July 2, 2012 3:24 pm

    Saurabh :

    venky :
for bad coverage operator isn’t only reason, our government also our government which auctioned for 1800 band instead of 900 .Now they are thinking to refarming the spectrum.

Get your facts right buddy. Spectrum in 900 MHz band was distributed among Airtel, BSNL, Idea and Vodafone between 1995-2004. Not a single MHz spectrum was available in 900MHz band i.e why new operators like Reliance GSM, Tata Docomo, Uninor, Loop Mobile, S Tel, Etisalat DB, Videocon all got spectrum in 1800MHz band. Now when 122 licenses which include that of Videocon, Uninor, Etisalat, Loop Mobile, Idea(9 circles), S Tel, Spice Telecom are cancelled, spectrum will be up for auction in 1800MHz. So, don’t blame Govt. They already provided all spectrum in 900MHz.
As far as spectrum refarming is concerned, Airtel, Idea and Vodafone licenses are due for renewal in 2014 in majority of states. Instead of renewing their licenses in 900MHz band, Department of Telecom will take it back and allot them spectrum in 1800MHz band in all circles where these companies are operating on 900MHz band. The price of spectrum in 900MHz band will be double of that of price being discovered in 1800MHz spectrum auction. So, those who will be ready to pay 2X Price will get it.

You are 100% correct. Thanks for clearing very ones confusion.

Is it true that 900mhz carry less signal and thus we experiences slow speed EDGE on Airtel Idea Vodafone BSNL and good speed 1800mhz of Docomo, aircel and reliance?

Does Airtel, idea, vodafone and bsnl has additional spectrum on 1800mhz in any circle?

Docomo has revised some of its 2G/GPRS packs in Haryana-

    1. Rs.69 pack will now offer 2GB for 21 days instead of 2.5GB for 30 days.

    2. A new Rs.89 pack with 3GB usage for 28 days has been introduced.

    3. Rs.149 pack with 8GB data for 30 days will be withdrawn.

    4. Rs.11 pack with 150MB for 4 days is withdrawn.

    5. Rs.5/15/26/95/115 are left unchanged but Rs.95 pack can be withdrawn in coming days or its cost will be increased.

You can dial *141# for more info. Besides this Docomo has now put up two options. Choosing 1 will allow you to subscribe auto-renewal pack while option 2 will allow one-time activation.

    Above plan is 3G plan.

  • Ramesh Darji July 2, 2012 12:49 pm

So share with your frnds and enjoy

    venky :
for bad coverage operator isn’t only reason, our government also our government which auctioned for 1800 band instead of 900 .Now they are thinking to refarming the spectrum.

    To Google :

Hey. Rs.5 pack is valid for 1 day and you cannot renew this pack before the expiration of the existing validity (even if the data is used fully).

    For example :

If you have enabled Rs.5 pack on 01st of a month (which is valid for 01st till 11:59 PM) and if the data is used before 11:59 PM on 1st itself, you can only enable Rs.5 pack only from 12:00AM on the 2nd day and not on the 01st day itself. Understand the logic man. In Airtel Tamilnadu it is like that.

Does these packs provide free internet even in the fall back 2G network too?? If not, this plan could make consumers shell out considerable amount on 2G internet, unknowingly, as our mobile phones might switch back to 2G if 3G coverage is not available when we set our mobile in Dual mode… If we keep in 3G only mode, we will be not reachable wherever 3G coverage is not available… In this particular feature, I felt Aircel 3G packs are better, but any ways daily pack at Rs 5 is truly amazing… Anyways Tata 3G is not present in Chennai, so I must be happy with Aircel 3G+2G packs :-)

How can an offer which was revised just 2 months back (exactly 58 days) be withdrawn 3 months back? This FRC was offering Rs.120 as core talktime before but after TRAI set new rules, they started providing 9000 seconds instead of talktime alongwith other benefits.

My cousin took Aircel SIM on June 11, 2012 and got the same benefit I mentioned, which is just 19-20 days back. So, what you said, is not true, atleast in my case.

Here is what customer care said when I called them few minutes back. Sir, this FRC-123 is still working with same benefits and is applicale to both new as well as port-in customers. I asked him twice to re-confirm and he said yes the offer has not been withdrawn.

This FRC-123 is available from the time Aircel started it’s operations in Haryana i.e from June, 2010 though they keep on changing benefits but have never ever withdrawn it. When I took the connection in Oct, 2010, I had got Rs.60 as TT and 1GB PI for 1 month and 100 sms/month for 3 months.

    @Anoop

No speed capping they set speed at 256kbps for all 2G pack. We get this speed even we use 2G pack on 3G network.

But there 2G speed is horrible. I get maximum 12kbps download speed. When I use 2G pack on 3G I get 32kbps. But still browsing is very slow, it takes more than 15 seconds to open some website. It shows “waiting for website.com”.

Now I use reliance. They have very good speed above 30 kbps. Website open faster and have good coverage.

Reliance new offer Rs 43 FRC. Rs 70TT + 500mb per month for 6 months + 1p/6sec reliance call + 1p/2sec other calls + Full TT on all top ups.

airtel got better coverage because they use 900 MHz band other new players use 1800 MHz band.

Yes it is true but uninor and reliance also use 1800 but still has better coverage than docomo and aircel.

Airtel don’t have access to 900MHz band in all circles or states. In Haryana only Vodafone, Idea and BSNL(in some parts) operates in 900MHz. BSNL has 4.4 MHz spectrum in 900MHz and 3.2MHz in 1800MHz band and unfortunately in my towns and nearby cities, they are operating on 1800MHz and that’s the reason why indoor coverage is not upto the mark.

Both Airtel and BSNL has 3 towers in my area and yet people here struggle with their network. BSNL has 2 EDGE enable towers while Airtel has only 1, other 2 are GPRS only. Both have worst 2G speed even near the tower.

One thing that suprises me sometimes is Tata/Aircel also have access to 1800MHz band in Haryana like Airtel/BSNL and their and have only 1 BTS each which is far from my colony (1.5Kms) yet their signal hardly fluctuates and indoor coverage is that like of Idea/Vodafone i.e always full with 72-77dBm. May be they are using better signal boosting techniques.

I get around 25-30kB/s on Tata Docomo these days and Aircel provides a constant of 25-27kB/s all day while downloading and if we access Tata network on Aircel SIM as they have tie-up with Tata Docomo also, speed moves even to 40-45 kB/s in morning.

Reliance also operates on 1800MHz and their signal also fluctuates indoor but you won’t face any problem while calling or using Internet. The bad thing is few days back they capped 2G speed to 128Kbps in our state.

Now come to Videocon, they don’t have good coverage in my area but I have their SIM which I bought for checking network and Internet speed but as I get only 1-2 bars signal, internet hardly connects and if it does, no data transfer but within 1000 meters radius they provide good coverage and internet speed is 15-35kB/s.

So, those with 200Kbps+ speed are Aircel, Idea, Tata Docomo, Videocon and Vodafone.

Can I ever get service which will consistently provide better 2G service so that I don’t have to recharge different SIMs every month? Currently I’m active on Idea but as data is less in 2G packs, will recharge Aircel in few days.

Kaha jaye ab? Kaash Idea 98 mein 3GB 2G deta toh apne saare sim fenk deta. Because with 2G pack active and 3G network, surfing is much much better @128Kbps also.

    Saurabh :
What’s the use of these plans? Docomo 3G is available in 9 circles only and they don’t have tie-up like Airtel-Idea-Vodafone to offer service on Pan-India basis. Though DoT can anytime stop ICRA. Also, Docomo 3G is limited to cities only. If you come to Haryana, you will find Docomo 3G signal within 3-5 Kms radius of city and after that no 3G signal for 50-100 Kms until next big city comes. Like if you are in Ambala and go towards Karnal, you will find 3G signal in Karnal but not anywhere in between. No town being covered. So, this revision will not generate greater revenues for company like Docomo. It’s OK that they don’t have tie-up in other circles but they can atleast cover these 9 circles well.
The good thing is that Docomo’s 2G speed has become better these days and speed limitations of 128Kbps is also removed. We are getting faster speed like we used to get when Docomo started their GSM operations. 25-30kB/s whole day.
On the other hand Idea has best 3G coverage in Haryana and Airtel is also getting benefitted from it as they are using Idea’s network here. You can find 3G signal every 8-10Kms and even in villages. Idea covered small cities and towns as they generate 65% of their total revenues from small cities, towns and villages. That’s the only reason why Idea has emphasized more on strengthening their presence in towns and villages.
Vodafone’s 3G coverage is even worst than Docomo though their 2G network is best like Idea.
I can understand Tata’s problem of having credit/cash problem due to which they are not aake to expand but they had to cover only 9 circles and not 22 and yet they fail to do so and covered 25-30 percent of total area in 21 months.
On the other hand Vodafone too got 3G license for 9 circles and their condition is worst than TD in our state as sometimes you will get 2G signal in cities also. Forget about towns and villages. Vodafone is slowest in network expansion among all in Haryana and I don’t know why it is so. A town with 1 Lakh+ population is still without 3G.
Docomo and other telcos has to understand that they can’t make big bucks until unless they make 3G avialable to towns.
This is the order of operators with maximum to minimum 3G presence in our state.
    1. Idea (Airtel also as they using Idea’s network)
    2. Tata Docomo
    3. Vodafone and BSNL.

Absolutely right bro. Tata Docomo doesnot spent a single paise on 3G network after launching which is almost 1.5 yrs back. In M.P circle Tata only in few cities and in those cities 3G network coverage is also poor even poorer than BSNL.

    @Saurabh
Tune bilkul sahi kaha bhai. Main yamunanagar mein rehta hu fir bhi mere area mein Docomo ki 3g nahi hai. 1km dur chale jayo toh 3g signal aa jata hai. District area ko bhi theek dhang se cover nahi kiya. Mere area mein bas idea aur bsnl ka signal aave hai. Bsnl ki 3g speed, idea se bekar hai. BSNL kaa toh bahot bura haal hai Haryana ma.

Meri salah te toh bas idea sabte mast aa.

Better use 21 plan twice to get 300MB for 6 days. Rs.5_50MB is cheapest among all operators but again in 9 circles only.

but i say 5 pack @ 50 mb! is wow!
    5×30=150rs
    50×30=1500mb 1.5gb for 150bucks the cheapest!

Your calculations are correct but there must be some T&C like you cannot recharge more data on the same day after Rs. 5.
If there is no such conditions, I have another plan for high data usage: after Rs. 5/22/39 recharge Rs. 4 and get 1GB+50MB/150MB/150MB for 1 day/ 3 days/ 7 days.

    Got the T&C:
1 GB Data usage with Rs. 4 recharge valid for 30 days, if this recharge is done in addition to Rs. 246 (gives Rs. 219 TT) recharge within 48 hrs of recharging with Rs. 246. This offer is completely optional for all subscribers.

Definitely this 5 rs pack should get 3g going especially for Students. Hope other operators also reduce the rates like this.

  • James June 30, 2012 4:58 pm

Docomo has to improve their coverage. Other operators like uninor, aircel, rgsm has better coverage.

  • Amit.g June 30, 2012 4:51 pm

Docomo network is not worthy to use even if they offer free services… Pathetic network quality. Airtel is far far better in quality & service. Airtel’s EDGE network works 20times faster than Docomo & Aircel’s EDGE networks.

These new operators failed to match quality with old operators. Aircel has just 12lak users out of which 30% are inactive.. but still there EDGE speed never goes beyond 56kbps

Docomo has improved their network drastically in mumbai…now can talk in trains without call droup…..love u docomo and will be with u forever

  • Upesh June 30, 2012 4:38 pm

We really appreciate the steps taken by Tata Docomo. Specially Rs. 5 pack will attract daily users who go on cyber cafe.
