AIRTEL Customers in AFRICA to Get FREE Incoming Calls While International Roaming in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh

Bharti Airtel, a leading global telecommunications services provider with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, today introduced the world’s first free intercontinental incoming roaming service by including India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to its current bouquet of ONE NETWORK services for its African customers.

Airtel customers in Africa will not need to register for the ONE NETWORK service or buy new SIM cards as they will now be automatically provisioned as ‘citizens’ of Airtel’s borderless network across 20 countries in Africa and Asia.Airtel customers already avail this facility across the company’s mobile network in 17 countries across Africa.

This offers opportunities to a base of 60 million Airtel customers in Africa to roam at affordable tariffs in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. By offering free incoming calls whilst roaming, the service ups the ante for global telecom providers as the seamless service across continents is a world-first amongst mobile service providers.

This will greatly benefit the travelling population, consisting of tourists, corporates, businessmen and students who want to keep in touch with people back home.

Within 17 African countries, ONE NETWORK also allows Airtel customers to use their local Airtel SIM cards whilst abroad, giving them access to attractive rates for calls made, access data, enjoy value added services and recharge using local top up vouchers in the country visited.

The service is poised to benefit increasing intra-regional trade between Africa and the South Asian nations which currently stands at over USD 60Billion. Equally, the number of travellers between Africa and the 3 countries has been growing. India is the main destination for most of African travellers for trade, its tertiary educational institutions and affordable medical facilitie

    India seems to be the only country in the world,perhaps where mobile license policies seems to be so complicated,in ROW the countries have a multiple operators providing service across the country on a single license.Here we multiple operators across the state spread over 22 license areas,It is time that these licenses should be updated for service across the nation on without delay and a mobile should be usable for service across the country for reasonable charges sans roaming,This in the long term would result in better ARPU and better availability of services and TRAI and DOT would not run out of Mobile numbers. Also this would require to reinstate licenses of those operators which have been cancelled,as with this,operators need to be present in all the 22 license areas.

    It is more of a gimick by Airtel to get more subscribers in Africa (17 countries).
    Let us say they have 10 million subscribers ,the % of people who travel to India/srilanka/bangla must be less than 1 %. still perception wise International roamiong to get new subscribers who will spend most of their time in Africa and not India (to avail free roaming)
    Next Vodafone Indoia will announce free Global Voda network (outside India) free incoming!!! Do you go to europe anytime soon? stil voda offering free international incoming will influence your decision for a new connection.
    But for most of us all operators should offer One India price.

    But there are many peolple travelling abroad,they will take it before travelling.

    Raghu :

    Not only free roaming. The TRAI must bring a rule that home tariffs will apply in roaming also.

    For example : In Tamilnadu, Airtel is providing local mobile call at Rs.0.30 per min in Rs.169 booster (valid for 90 days). So if we go to other state (Delhi or so) all calls made to mobile networks within the roaming circle must be Rs.0.30 per minute. Because all local mobile calls will be charged at Rs.0.30 per minute.

  • Raghu November 16, 2012 1:13 am

    This Airtel wants to loot the money in India and offer International Roaming for Africans free in India. What happened to our Free Roaming inside India. TRAI AND DOT should look into this immediately and bring the Free Roaming immediately

  • Ayusman November 15, 2012 9:38 pm

    @DB

    Dear DB, if u get any African Sim, it may not be beneficial for you. You expect that your incoming calls will be free, where as you may not get a call as the Person may not call you by paying/wasting INR 10 ( Approximately ) instead of INR 0.60 . Cause it is equal to call to a African Country Na !!

  • DB November 15, 2012 8:26 pm

    @sandeep

    SANDEEP – dont worry Im sure with time these AFRICAN SIM cards will be readily available – if not in the local ‘chor bazar’ then in your nearby ARC (Airtel Relationship Centre).

    >> So now we had to import airtel sim from africa to enjoy free roaming in our own country.

  • DB November 15, 2012 8:14 pm

Can any one tell one customer friendly move by SIBAL? Spectrum auction failure is due his poor knowledge in telecom field. And he is only responsible for tariff hike.
