Chinese phone maker Xiaomi is all set to announce the Xiaomi Mi 6X at an event in China on April 25. The company may also bring a new budget smartphone series the Redmi S2 at the upcoming event. As per the latest reports, Xiaomi is also working on a new ultra-affordable phone with an 18:9 aspect ratio and dual rear cameras that will launch in China and India. Now, the alleged Redmi S2 with a 6-inch display and three RAM/storage variants recently passed China’s certification agency TENAA. The phone comes with the model number M1803E6E which matches that of Redmi S2’s internal codename in the firmware files obtained earlier by XDA developers. The timing of TENAA certification going up also hints the launch of Redmi S2 is happening sooner.
The new information from TENAA reveals the Redmi S2 dimensions will measure at 160.7 x 77.3 x 8.1mm, and weigh in at 170g. The device will pack a 5.99-inch HD+ display with 1440×720 pixels resolution and has the modern 18:9 aspect ratio. While the name of the processor is not clear, the TENAA listing shows a CPU with eight cores and maximum clock speed of 2.0GHz. Reports have hinted the Redmi S2 will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 system-on-chip.
The Redmi S2 will be offered in three variants based on RAM and storage as per the listing: 2GB RAM + 16GB storage, 3GB RAM + 32GB storage, and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. The device will also support storage expansion via microSD card.
Interestingly, the handset has been listed to run Google’s latest mobile operating system the Android 8.1 Oreo. However, it will feature Xiaomi’s own MIUI 9 skin on the top. In addition, the device will be fueled by a 3000mAh battery. The Redmi S2 will be available in nine colour options which include: White, Silver, Gray, Black, Gold, Rose Gold, Blue, Red, and Pink.
In terms of the camera, the Redmi S2 is reported to come with a dual camera setup on the rear comprising of a 12MP Sony IMX486 sensor as the primary sensor and a 5MP Samsung S5K5E8 secondary sensor. On the front, the device will bear a 5MP front camera. The cameras will be equipped with EIS, Bokeh effect, and facial recognition features.
Xiaomi has scheduled an event for April 25, and the Mi 6X has been confirmed as the star of that show. The company, however, also might launch the Redmi S2 series.
