Virgin Media O2 Boosts Network in Holiday Hotspots as Staycations Soar

Virgin Media O2 has unveiled a major expansion of its 4G and 5G mobile network, focusing on rural areas and sought-after holiday destinations across the UK. The telco stated that it had taken steps to upgrade its network across over 72,000 "destination" postcodes since May of the previous year.

Network Expansion in Key Locations

According to Virgin Media O2 (VMO2), much-loved staycation spots such as the Scottish Highlands, the Hebrides, Kent, East Sussex, and Yorkshire are already reaping the benefits of these enhancements. Charming coastal towns, including Whitstable, St Ives, Scarborough, and Brighton, have also seen significant improvements.

Partnership for Underserved Regions

Virgin Media O2, the Welsh Government, and Wavemobile - rural coverage experts - partnered to bring advanced connectivity to underserved areas. South Stack, a nature reserve in rural Wales, now has reliable mobile signal coverage, even in remote areas. This has pleased visitors and boosted the local economy by enabling card payments at the visitor centre.

Staycation Preference & Connectivity Importance

Virgin Media O2's recent survey found that 65 percent of Brits are opting for staycations this year. The South West (16 percent) and Scotland (13 percent) have emerged as the most preferred destinations. The Scottish Highlands and Islands (19 percent), Yorkshire (15 percent), and Cornwall (14 percent) were identified as the most common signal dead spots.

According to VMO2, Many British vacationers prioritize strong internet access when choosing a staycation destination, with 70 percent considering it important. Over half (57 percent) would avoid rural areas without reliable connectivity.

Surge in Summer Staycations

Staycations at popular tourist destinations have increased since the start of the summer holidays, according to O2 Motion data. There's been a notable rise in visitor numbers during the first weekend of the school break.

Boosting Rural Tourism and Economy

Virgin Media O2 said Improved connectivity could boost the Euros 4 billion rural tourism sector, but it needs to adapt to keep up with digital trends.

The telco emphasized the commitment to ensuring seamless access to services regardless of weather conditions. "With the school summer holidays well underway, we are doubling down on improving and expanding our network so that, come rain or shine, our customers have access to the services they want wherever and whenever they need them."

For those venturing beyond the UK this year, O2 said it remains the sole major network that does not impose extra charges for EU roaming up to a cap of 25GB.
