Australian telecom company Telstra, the Australian government, and Norfolk Island Regional Council's Norfolk Telecom have collaborated to provide a satellite internet service that now delivers network speeds four times faster on Norfolk Island. Norfolk Telecom offers telecommunications services to the Norfolk Island community.

Significant Speed Boosts
Norfolk Island, located 1,500 km east of mainland Australia, has significantly upgraded its internet connectivity with the launch of a new satellite service. The new Telstra Managed Satellite Internet service, powered by Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) and some Geostationary (GEO) satellites, delivers a fourfold increase in capacity.

Enhancing Educational Opportunities
According to Telstra, the remote island, home to 2,221 residents and up to 600 weekly tourists, has long faced challenges with slow internet speeds. Norfolk Island Central School now benefits from speeds of 250 Mbps for downloads and 50 Mbps for uploads during school hours, allowing students access to digital tools, virtual lessons, and global collaboration.

Community Benefits Beyond the Classroom
When school isn't in session, this bandwidth is redistributed to residential users, ensuring the entire community enjoys faster internet, as Telstra explained. The improved service is critical for essential services like the Norfolk Island Health and Residential Aged Care Service.
