The Indian telecom regulator is looking to revise the service quality norms for 4G services in the country. The revision will focus on the improvement of services, and if telcos don’t meet the minimum QoS (Quality of Service) norms, they will have to pay penalties. 4G services are widespread in the country with three major players offering it - Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. A fourth player, BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) is likely to enter the 4G competition too.

According to an ET report, in the coming days, TRAI will come out with the revised set of rules or parameters for 4G QoS. For the time being, the telecom regulator is not putting stringent QoS parameters for 5G services. This is because the telcos are still in the rollout and network optimisation stage with it. But in the future, TRAI will definitely ask the telcos to adhere to 5G QoS rules too.
As per the report, TRAI is also going to likely ask the telecom operators to report the data to it on a monthly basis. One issue that has been identified recently is that poor quality of wireless services in some LSAs (Licensed Service Areas) gets averaged out with high quality services in other LSAs. The telecom regulator wants to ensure that this does not remain the case and citizens across the country should be able to get decent quality mobile services.

Call drops were an issue when the telcos started rolling out 5G. However, it has been sorted out to some extent in the last few months by the telecom operators. Regardless, there are many citizens in the country that are not getting decent quality services despite paying the same as users in other areas that are getting good services. The revised quality of service norms will ensure that telcos offer good network services in all parts of the country.
