Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has announced free 4G SIM upgradation for customers. The state-run telco is trying to get its users to upgrade their old SIM cards to 4G SIMs so that they can enjoy fast-network services once it launches 4G. BSNL is currently very close to launching homegrown 4G in several parts of the country. BSNL is taking the help of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tejas Networks, and C-DoT (Centre for Development of Telematics) to roll out its 4G.
According to a report from TheHindu, Ravi Kumar Bunga, Chief General Manager Telecom, Andhra Pradesh Circle, BSNL, said that the union government has introduced new norms on digitalisation. There are many customers who got their SIM cards from BSNL through paper applications. Such customers of the company can digitalise their paper application by visiting any of the nearest BSNL offices or agents and completing the KYC (Know Your Customer) process by bringing a copy of their Aadhaar before September 9, 2023.

As per the report, there are about 9 lakh customers in the state that are still using the 3G services of BSNL. Those customers can now upgrade to a 4G SIM without any additional cost. Note that BSNL doesn't plan to stop 2G or 3G services any time soon. There are still millions of customers who rely on legacy network services to connect to others. However, since the 4G SIM upgradation is free, customers should likely get their SIM cards upgraded. It will enable them to enjoy high-speed networks once BSNL launches 4G.
