Bhubaneswar Smart City Limited (BSCL) has recently reintroduced its free Wi-Fi facility across the state capital of Odisha. After being temporarily discontinued during the Covid-19 pandemic, the service has now been expanded to cover an impressive 500 locations, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy seamless connectivity throughout the city, said a TOI report.
In a tweet on Tuesday, BSCL announced the return of the free Wi-Fi service, highlighting its upgraded features. Users can now experience a high-speed connection of up to 30 Mbps and enjoy a daily download limit of 500MB at no cost. This development marks a significant expansion of the Wi-Fi service, which was initially introduced in 2018 with only 100 access points along Smart Janpath. The ambitious plan was to gradually extend the facility to over 500 locations in three phases. However, due to the unforeseen challenges posed by the pandemic in 2020, the expansion project had to be temporarily put on hold.

The reintroduction of the free Wi-Fi service in Bhubaneswar has been met with enthusiasm from the local community. Several key areas, including Saheed Nagar, Vani Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Nayapalli, Sailashree Vihar, Niladri Vihar, and Chandrasekharpur, among others, now have access to this valuable amenity.
While the availability of free Wi-Fi is undoubtedly convenient, IT experts have urged caution when using public networks. They have advised users to refrain from browsing or transmitting personal or financial data over these connections, as they can be susceptible to hacking attempts.
BSCL's commitment to providing free Wi-Fi aligns with its dedication to the Smart City Mission, which aims to enhance the overall lifestyle and technological advancement of the city. The reintroduction of this service reflects Bhubaneswar's progress in embracing smart technologies and ensuring seamless connectivity for its residents and visitors.
