Airtel Uganda recently secured the spectrum for 5G deployment, following which it announced the activation of 5G services at Bulange, Mengo, at the end of July 2023. As reported by TelecomTalk, Airtel Uganda announced plans to gradually launch 5G on a site-by-site basis, initially covering 50 sites in Kampala's central business district. In further 5G expansion developments, Airtel Uganda has been activating 5G services at various prominent locations. According to Airtel Uganda's LinkedIn updates, Airtel 5G is the first 5G network in Uganda.

Collaborative Opportunities with Next Wowzi Platform
In a recent development, Airtel has partnered with Next Media and the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance to launch the Next Wowzi platform. Airtel has announced that the Next Wowzi platform will connect influencers with top brands and leverage advanced analytics to generate over 1.5 million jobs in the next five years. Airtel Uganda facilitated influencers in experiencing 5G speeds through a Virtual Reality demonstration.

Airtel's Expanding 5G Coverage
Regarding Airtel's 5G expansion, Airtel stated, "In 2019, when we launched 4G, it facilitated various developments, such as enabling remote work during the Covid-19 outbreak. Now, it's the turn of 5G." Airtel mentioned that in December 2022, they introduced 5G on a trial basis to gather feedback and measurements. In July, they acquired a license for 5G and rapidly deployed 50 sites within a record month. Airtel Uganda said, the first site was in Mengo at the Buganda Kingdom HQ.
Airtel Uganda has recently expanded its 5G mobile network coverage to include the premises of Nation Media Group (NMG) and the surrounding areas. On this occasion, Airtel highlighted the introduction of advanced technologies, including Airtel eSIM, which enables customers to store up to 10 SIM cards on their phones and switch between any two at a given time.

Before this, Airtel Uganda had also extended 5G coverage to various locations and their surroundings, including Diamond Trust Bank (DTB) Centre, Centenary Bank, Equity Bank, Church House, and the corresponding areas. Additionally, Uganda Golf Course, Kitante, and the surrounding areas were covered, along with Next Media Park in Naguru and its vicinity.
Speke Apartments, UBC, and their surrounding areas were included, as were Stanbic Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, and their adjacent regions. The Uganda Communications Commission Premises and the Bugoloobi neighborhood were also encompassed. All these regions are now Airtel 5G Zones.
Driving Affordability and Accessibility
During the 5G launch event held at Kampala Serena Hotel earlier in August, TECNO and Infinix, which have already initiated efforts to make 5G smartphones affordable for everyone through Device Financing partnerships with Airtel Uganda, demonstrated Airtel 5G on their smartphones.

Airtel Uganda IPO
As reported by TelecomTalk, Airtel Africa has also revealed that its subsidiary in Uganda, Airtel Uganda, will soon be listed on the Ugandan Securities Exchange (USE). Airtel Uganda, at the time of the IPO announcement, stated that it has been providing mobile telecommunications services in Uganda since 1995. It highlighted that Airtel has emerged as a co-leader in the market with a 49 percent revenue share and a 47.3 percent subscriber market share.
