Bharti Airtel, India's second-largest telecom operator, is looking to form a collaborative front to tackle the problem of spam communication. To this extent, Airtel's CEO, Gopal Vittal wrote to the heads of the respective telecom companies including Reliance Jio, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Vodafone Idea (Vi). In his letter, Vittal said that the companies should establish a system to share details of corporate connections used for commercial calling. This way, all of the companies can monitor and track if these connections are used for fraudulent communication, said an ET report.

Vittal said in the letter that the data should be shared with all the companies using a template every month. This will enable the companies to ensure that these connections are not misused. This is crucial data for the telcos and they have never shared this with each other before. Thus, whether it will happen this time or not is something we will have to wait and see.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has become pretty aggressive about curbing spam communications in the country. The regulatory body has come up with stringent rules and policies that will ensure that spam communication is reduced significantly. TRAI has ordered the telcos only to send SMS from registered templates and even asked the telcos to take the information of the URLs, APK, and more in advance from the enterprises before sending it to the customers.

Much recently, TRAI also advised the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to encash the bank guarantees submitted by the telcos for not paying penalties. The penalties are related to not being able to curb spam communications for years. BSNL/MTNL have the largest sum of penalty to pay here.
