Airtel has rolled out an advanced AI-powered spam detection system that reportedly has blocked 122 million spam calls and 2.3 million spam SMS messages in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, a top executive of the telecom service provider said, according to The Hindu report. The service available for free and designed to enhance customer security, is automatically available to all Airtel smartphone users in these regions without any need for downloads or complex setups.

AI Technology Behind the Detection System
In a release, Airtel said the AI-powered solution, developed in-house, employs a proprietary algorithm that analyses around 250 parameters—such as caller behaviour, call frequency, and duration—to identify and classify suspected spam in real-time.
"Integrated into the Airtel ecosystem, this cutting-edge offering allows the consumers to enjoy its robust safeguarding benefits without the need for any additional downloads, complex setup processes or disruptive changes to their normal routines," the report quoted Shivan Bhargava, CEO of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala of Bharti Airtel as saying.
Protection Against Malicious Links and Fraudulent Activity
The dual-layered approach includes filters at both the network and IT systems levels, allowing the system to process 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls in just two milliseconds. This efficiency equates to processing 1 trillion records in real-time, Airtel said.
Additionally, the system protects users from malicious links found in SMS messages by scanning them against a centralised database of blacklisted URLs. It also detects anomalies, such as frequent IMEI changes, which can indicate fraudulent activity.
