Tariff hike is all set to be introduced on wired broadband sector, as per our internal sources at BSNL. We have come to know that country's largest broadband service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is going to introduce revised postpaid unlimited broadband plans w.e.f. 1st March, 2013.

Just yesterday media reports that DoT is going to hike the fee for ISP license, and by all means one effect is going to heard that is internet to be costly. It seems BSNL is safeguarding its revenue by early tairff hike on ADSL broadband.

India's broadband penetration is too poor, and Govt has some on-the-book ambitious plans, but no one knows when it can be acheived. BSNL enjoys a monopoly in broadband market with its huge coverage. But in last few years BSNL has been challenged by private operators like Airtel, Reliance Communications, Beam Telecom (Hyderabad), Alliance & Meghbela Broadband (Kolkata) and several smaller players in selected cities. Many customers have been churned out from BSNL due to better offerings from these players. BSNL has several unlimited plans with fair usage policy with no speed upgradation in last 5 years, while these players offer true unlimited at cheaper rates.

It should be noted that the hike in the postpaid rental is starting from Rs 25. And popular plans has been increased by Rs 50 - Rs 100. Though this hike is not heavy, but it's a bad sign for growth of broadband.
