Videocon To Shut Down GSM Operations in 11 Circles Including Mumbai, Asks Customers To Port Out Before 18 January

Videocon which currently operates GSM services in 18 circles, and won back 6 of its 17 circles (excluding Punjab) in the recent spectrum auction has now asked its customers in 11 telecom circles including Mumbai to Port Out from its network to any other service provider using Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in respective circles.

Videocon Mobile Service

In an official communications to all customers Vidiocon said “As per Hon’ble Supreme Court’s order, Videocon services will not be available from Jan 19, 2013 (00.00 hour). Please use your available balance and port out than”.

Videocon currently operates in Tamil Nadu( including Chennai ), Punjab (with Hfcl Infotel Ltd), Haryana,  Mumbai, Gujarat, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh & Chattisgarh, UP East, UP West and Himachal Pradesh. However Videocon is commercially available in selected circles like Tamilnadu, Mumbai & Maharastra, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab and Kerala. While 18 circles out of 22 are listed on Videocon’s website to show their minimal presence to meet roll out obligations.

In the recent auction of 1800MHz  airwave Videocon won back just 6 circles -Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana,  Madhya Pradedsh , UP – East, UP – West, and failed to get spectrum and license for all other circles including Mumbai. Apart from these 6 circles Its GSM service will be continue in Punjab circles wherein it is operating under brand sharing agreement between HITL (Hfcl Infotel Ltd) and Videocon.

On 17 December India’s telecom regulator TRAI gave a 15 days deadline to the all mobile service providers who’s licences had quashed by SC, to inform their subscribers about the closer of mobile service in the respective circles and also send text messages or provide this information in writing to all their customers in those circles where they failed to retain spectrum and renew their licences.

The shutting down of mobile operations of these operators will continue till, the telecom field in india will stabilize. Most of players in this field today will not be available tomorrow. Only BSNL , Airtel, idea ,Tata, Vodafone will be only available.

    • VENKAT January 5, 2013 5:46 pm

What about reliance rajiv! in my opinion tata may merge with some other operator and reliance will stay. do you agree? and one more question friend. why reliance is not promoting cdma network? will they expand or not?

  • prahallad January 4, 2013 11:14 pm

There is no alternative to BSNL in many circles.

  • Deep January 4, 2013 9:47 pm

BSNL is the best in Kerala and Tamilnadu. No hidden charges and better coverage.

  • Rahul January 4, 2013 3:01 pm

One day operators will charge for missed calls also.
Then for every time you dial a number and you get engage tone.

  • Arif January 4, 2013 2:34 pm

  • Susanta January 4, 2013 2:02 pm

Only 1 year back when there were tough competetion in this sector. But all scenario had change after regjuction of 122 licence by S.C order. As the result all BIG GIANT of indian telecom like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea they are just hike hike hike and hiked up price and kickout us at our back. Like an e.g Aitel 98/2GB now at 198.

The ground is clear from cheap operator UNINOR nd VIDEOCON. Give him chance to strock us at highly call rates. Let us ready for next chargeable incoming SMS… Its serious. ;-)

    • prahallad January 4, 2013 11:12 pm

All the big operators has paid big amount to Govt. and hence can not run in cheap rate while certain small players just manupulated political boss and may be bribed them and hence can run in very cheap rate but SC caught them red handed

  • Venky January 4, 2013 10:43 am

From chennai try with reliance gsm.

  • S.Sudhakar January 4, 2013 8:12 am

Videocon provided damn cheap tariff in Tamilnadu. The 4 operators airtel, aircel, bsnl and vodafone never allow cheap tariff operator to sustain in the market. Thats why they crushed such operators in the name of spectrum scam.

    • DB January 4, 2013 6:36 pm

S Sudhakar, you seem to be all mixed up!
Its not VIDEOCON who was not allowed to survive because of “damn cheap tariff” its the “saman cheap tariff” which has caused VIDEOCON to go for a toss…. to elaborate: the same “damn cheap tariff” would not be so cheap if they have re-purchase the Cancelled 2008 Licenses – at 2013 Rates !!

  • Pike January 4, 2013 8:09 am

My videocon no. is temporarily blocked in which i get signal but i’m not able to make/receive calls (not even able to call customer care) ! Now wat can i do.. to make my no active for porting out ?

    • ckswain January 4, 2013 11:40 am

About portability I think STEL is the best they have online portability service put your data like Mobile No. and SIM No. get your MNP code easily. Kindly suggest your operator over phone.

  • Binu Kumar S January 4, 2013 6:23 am

These private operators never think of public, their only aim is to get Profit. So dont take any pvt SIMs. GO for BSNL. Its the best. Billing is transparent.

    • S.Sudhakar January 4, 2013 8:15 am

BSNL is charging more in voice, sms and gprs during the festival days. Who will use it?. If we want, we can use it as secondary number when we travel in remote areas.

As for now in Tamilnadu no operator has said that they will charge more for voice calls (in addition to the SMS chargeable basis).

    • amit January 4, 2013 1:53 pm

      rightly said friend.

    • DB January 4, 2013 6:38 pm

BINU S KUMAR – you sound exactly like a BSNL employee when you state “private operators never think of public, their only aim is to get Profit. ”

Are the Telcos here for CHARITY/SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY or to do BUSINESS? If the latter then they need to aim for PROFIT !!!

  • rajat January 3, 2013 11:23 pm

any one know when the next spectrum auction for all circles?

  • KAPIL K. DEV January 3, 2013 7:19 pm

MTS india official website showing that MTS is not shutting down.

  • Deepak January 3, 2013 7:18 pm

Videocon: the cheapest mobile service in Indian history.

  • PRABU January 3, 2013 5:31 pm

I am using videocon sim in tamilnadu.after saw this message i approached aircel office for port out.but they said there is no option for videocon.so unable to port out to other network.

    • S.Sudhakar January 4, 2013 12:41 am

Change to Idea or Airtel for now. After 3 months, change to the operator of your choice.

    • DB January 4, 2013 6:40 pm

PRABHU – no operator can refuse a port in from any operator.
Seems they dont want you to port in to AIRCEL for whatever reason (could be you are a low billing customer of VIDEOCON).

  • Rahul January 3, 2013 5:24 pm

The Rs. 399 – 3000 local minutes was best plan of Mumbai Circle.

  • Saurabh January 3, 2013 4:19 pm

I checked Videocon’s website and they have reloaded the plans again for the circles where they were operating commercially and also retained the license. The plans page were taken off before but now they’re back.

So out of 7, Videocon is commercially available in 4 circles only i.e Gujarat, Haryana, MP incl. Chattisgarh and Punjab.

As far as 2G Data packs are concerned there’re no changes for Haryana and Punjab circle. The packs are same i.e 35MB in Rs.5 for 1 day, 500MB in Rs.13 for 3 days, 1GB in Rs.22 for 7 days, 2GB in Rs.58 for 30 days and Unlimited without any FUP in Rs.96 for 30 days. But in Gujarat and MP incl. Chattisgarh packs have been revised. The 96 pack is providin 4GB which is still good if we compare with others offering 650MB-1.5GB. 58 giving 1.5GB in Gujarat for 30 days and giving 2GB in MP but for 21 days. Also Rs.13 pack is giving 300MB for 3 days in both these circles.

They paid Rs.899.06 for Gujarat circle for 5MHz spectrum and while that for Haryana it was almost 1/5 times at Rs.186.8 crores. It can be the reason for not changing plan. I hope Videocon’s signal gets better at my place too as all my friends have started using Videocon as they reside near the cell sites. All that download junkies using 96 unlimited. lol :)

  • Saurabh January 3, 2013 3:51 pm

I’m waiting for changes in plans from Videocon Tele in Haryana. Until now it has been same as before and cheapest among all operators but lets see how much they reduce usage in various packs but I’m sure it will remain competitive. The other thing to look out for is network coverage. Until now they have around 900 Cell sites in Haryana which needs to be doubled atleast. Even though they’re operating on 1800MHz, Videocon’s service quality either it be Voice clarity or 2G Data speed remains good wherever they’ve network present and signal is strong. When they expand and more subscribers choose them, service quality will slide.
Aircel is already gone from Haryana. So, all eyes on Videocon for cheaper services and lets see whether they start LTE or not. lol

  • Abhijit January 3, 2013 3:48 pm

What about Uninor Mumbai circle ? As they also failed to get license in the recent spectrum auction !! So still no news or any SMS from Uninor too !! What will happen after 18 Jan whether continuing services or not !

  • abhijeet January 3, 2013 2:22 pm

Bye Videocon! we will miss u. thanks for the cheapest call rates, i enjoyed in mumbai cirlce!

  • Harish January 3, 2013 1:16 pm

I am currently using MTS MBlaze and there is a news on its site that due to some Supreme Court orders, it is licensed to continue its operation till January 18th 2013. What are the chances of MTS getting to continue after that deadline, because I have recharged my data card for the whole January and I fear that my money might go wasted!

  • Harish January 3, 2013 1:11 pm

anyway, not many people were using Videocon SIMs!

    • Naveen January 4, 2013 3:09 pm

In Haryana, BSNL is the cheapest with full coverage even in remote areas. I am regular user of it. They have never cheated as the other mobile operators do on regular basis. Better to change over in the BSNL a Govt. owned PSU.
