As new players left the market, it’s preying time for incumbents. They are hiking tariffs and some (read BSNL) are following them to take an axe bow on their customers.
New range of tariff hike extends to SMS also. Recently the trio – Airtel, Vodafone and Idea (A-Vo-Id) hike their SMS value packs upto 400%. As we are shared information, the new tariff for SMS packs are already available in Kerala. We guess similar plans are also rolled out or rolling out in all circles.
Check out the new SMS packs from Airtel, Vodafone and Idea in Kerala circle:

On what ground and its too much

This hike sure looks like carteling – now all operators have equally priced plans..

vsk January 15, 2013 at 8:17 pm
hello…am from kerala…dear friends plz port to reliance in kerala…..
good offers….all loc/nat mobile call at 1/2 paise ,,also land line calls at 1 paise….all india sms at 5paise. also 500 mb data free on every month. validity :6 months…so plz port ….and enjoy these benefits in kerala…
S.Sudhakar January 15, 2013 at 9:38 pm
Almost same benefits are in Tamilnadu also.
But the disadvantages in reliance gsm Tamilnadu :
> Worst coverage
> Always logging into aircel network
> GPRS does not work at all in aircel ICR network using reliance gsm SIM
> You have to try several times to connect to GPRS when logged into reliance network itself !!!
> No coverage inside 3 side covered buildings (like shuttered hotel where 1 side stays open) !!!
Idea also does not provide 60% coverage in rural areas, worst in problem rectification. Missed call alert is not even getting activated (amount not deducted). But it has booster pack Rs.68 for 90 days – All India calls at Rs.0.30 per minute (including landline !!!). GPRS gets connected in the first attempt itself.
Tata docomo – Same like reliance GSM
Airtel, Aircel and Vodafone – The booster pack’s tariff is almost the same (Rs.165 to 169 for all local mobile calls at Rs.0.30 for 90 days and Rs.325 for on net mobiles at Rs.0.10 and offnet mobiles at Rs.0.30 per minute) in all the 3 providers. GPRS connectivity – same like IDEA
BSNL – All local mobiles at Rs.0.01 for 2 seconds at Rs.44 for 30 days (earlier it was Rs.35). Good coverage. GPRS connectivity – same like IDEA. Free missed call alerts.
DISADVANTAGE : No off-net SMS packs available now.
Note : I am talking about the above operators in Tamilnadu only
I don’t know what to do. Shame on indian telecom.
vsk January 28, 2013 at 8:36 pm
in kerala idea has good coverage even in rural areas….but plan wise very worst……all calls at 1.5 p/s….rate cutters r very costly……rs.124 for 1gb 2g data 4 three mnths….rs.76 for 1000 loc/nat sms for 30 days…..what else very worst…same for vodafone ,,,nd airtel….poor aircel stop in kerala
anoop February 3, 2013 at 4:32 pm
i think now the plan is changed to 90 days (3 months)
tanujit dey January 15, 2013 at 4:35 pm
BSNL is bttr n cheaper thn ny othr ntwrks i guess!!!

DK AGGARWAL January 14, 2013 at 9:44 pm
BSNL IS BETTER THAN PRIVATE OPERATORS . BSNL SERVICES ARE BEST . NO HIDDEN CHARGES COMPLETE TRANSPARENCY . BUT OUR LEADERS IN CONNIANCE WITH PRIVATE OPRATORS TRY TO RUIN IT
DK AGGARWAL January 14, 2013 at 9:41 pm
IN CASE BSNL OR MTNL FAILED THAN PRIVATE OPRATORS AGAIN INCREASE CALL RATE TO RS 10 PER MINUTE FOR ROANING AND LOCAL CALL RS 25 FOR STD PER MIN. RS 5 PER SMS
PRIVATE OPRATORS LOOT THIS COUNTRY ONE WAY OR OTHER.
CONGRESS IS ALSO PARTNERS IN THIS LOOT OF POOR PEOPLE .

Manish Adhikari January 13, 2013 at 6:44 pm
I am also using Aircel prepaid in Delhi-NCR region but never heard about these plans which you mention over here.
The plan you described here as RC68 is actually RC62 plan and RC95 plan does not exist in Delhi region as it is not available in the aircel’s website as well as local dealer also don’t know about this plan.
So, overall nowadays aircel is good only for those customers who have aircel friends, as they offer cheap rates only for aircel to aircel.
i.e., SMS for cheaper rates was reduced and compensate with local aircel to aircel etc.
2G internet is horrible as no network area in most of the parts in Delhi, like in Basement of Delhi metro etc.
So, better not to opt for an aircel connection…. All operators are cheated customers now a days…..
Thanks!!!
prateek January 13, 2013 at 7:26 pm
sry for that ya that is rc 62 and rc 95 is latest ratecutter is coming in jan 1st week i see banner in local dealer…and i call the cc that also say….talk about net whr i m living in karol bagh thre net r awsm or whr i go netwk is coming or net also…i agree in delhi metro in selcted station only…not coming network…but now a days othr companies like voda, airtel, idea, rel they r hike in traifff….talk about rel…thats a wrst network…and other u knw that…now a days they reduce net pack 98 they given 1gb now a days they given 600mb….so my idea aircel is good
Manish Adhikari January 13, 2013 at 10:59 pm
Price wise no doubt Aircel is still far cheaper then other operators in Delhi but still they have to do alot of work to improve their network quality. May be in Karol Bagh area Aircel 2G is better but in my area (Rohini) it’s network is poor. Yea, in comparison to Reliance it is better. But, internet is of no use if u take 2-3 minutes only for opening Google homepage….
If you are an internet lover i think you should opt Airtel, which still gives 1GB in RC98 if recharge from their OWN WEBSITE ONLY, otherwise you’ll give only 600MB for 21 days for the same price if recharged from dealer or online.
Thanks!!!
prateek January 14, 2013 at 12:28 pm
ya i agree aircel in rohni is not their network bcz my frnd living rohni….i go their but aircel network is avble only 1 or 2 bar show….but now a days is ok for my opnin….bcz other opertr r gng triff in hike..before i hve voda….not a doubt network is very good….but traiff i dnt think so good…and my recharge is 500 in voda or aircel recharge is 200 or 300 so u see my money saving …and airtel i hate it….and talk about net i did’t see any problm…my speed is 2g 20kbps to 25kbps around…google page is load 30 sec to 40 sec..
Ripudaman Singh January 12, 2013 at 1:10 am
When I ported into Tata Docomo on 29 Jan 2011 they gave an SMS offer for Lifetime. 100 sms free after the first one charged at 60 paise.
So I don’t bother about hike in SMS pack prices. My monthly expense on SMS can never go beyond 18 Rs/Month for 3000 sms.
Saurabh January 12, 2013 at 9:31 am
Hahahaha.. Same here..
swarnava January 12, 2013 at 9:08 pm
Same here also..
jigar January 11, 2013 at 11:13 pm
This is my personal opinion for Gujarat service area,
In Gujarat, Videocon Rocks in GPRS..and finally videocon on the track of the making customer..For Initial offer they give more in small bucket but quality is excellent even in crowded area in city, they give 200 kbps average constant speed in whole day…
In 60 Rs 1.5 GB GPRS DATA,200 minutes for local call for 30 days & for upto 90days
20 p/minute videocon 2 videocon & other mobile local call @ 30p/minute …
So In my friend circal they leave Docomo GSM & also faced problem in sms delivery report on Airtel Vodafone Idea nos. only , so they choose videocon for 1p/sms @ just in STV12 and …And i’m already customer of videocon from the last 2 year with same no.
Uninor also good but sms pack and gprs speed is very low only 80 kbps in day and Uninor also hiked tariff in stv i.e reducing days 30 days to 28 days..

Friends,
To enhance the visibility of BSNL’s SMS Packs Revision – read the following things once again here, so moderator pls don’t delete this post for atleast for BSNL .
Private Network customers should the following changes in Chennai and RoTN.
Here in Chennai and Rest Of Tamil Nadu :
Due to Airtel and Vodafone’s forcefully demanding 10 paise for every SMS (terminations charges for SMS) generated from other network and it has raised bill (huge amount) towards SMS termination Charges to BSNL Chennai and BSNL RoTN .
So that BSNL is unable to manage with / provide existing volume based Free SMS packs (1500,3000,4500,6000 for Rs.21 (15 days), Rs.36 (30 days), Rs.46 (45 days), Rs.56 (60 days) respectively to BSNL 2G and 3G mobile customers.
So there is no other way to go, all ready BSNL is bleeding with the loss of 20,000 crore due to unable to expand the networks / deploy the latest tech to compete with private networks because of congress govt / ministry peoples.
Finally, Volume Based SMS pack, RC46 / SMS46 : 4500 Free L/N/Roaming SMS for 45 days has been withdrawn on 10-01-2013.
BSNL 2G & 3G – NEW SMS PACKS w.e.f : 11-01-2012 :
A. 100 Local/National BSNL SMS Free, Other Local / National SMS@12p/SMS :
DO RC36 / SMS36 to 53733 (Tollfree) to activate above SMS benefits for 15 days
DO RC56 /SMS56 to 53733 (Tollfree) to activate above benefits for 30 days .
This will be one of the best and cheapest SMS packs in Tamilnadu.
Apart from this,
B. All Local & National BSNL SMS @1p/SMS, Other Local & National SMS@10p/SMS :
DO RC12 / Do SMS12 to 53733 (Tollfree) to activate above benefits – 7 days
DO RC21 / Do SMS21 to 53733 (Tollfree) to activate above benefits – 15 days
DO RC33 / Do SMS33 to 53733 (Tollfree) to activate above benefits – 30 days
DO RC54 / Do SMS54 to 53733 (Tollfree) to activate above benefits – 60 days
This will be one of the best and cheapest SMS packs in Chennai and Rest Of Tamilnadu.

Save BSNL! Save Nations telecom back-bone.
Antony - Coimbatore January 14, 2013 at 8:58 pm
Previously an airtel customer, i ported to bsnl (and even made 4 of my friends to port from airtel to bsnl) since it had some attractive elements to offer. The sms plans came as a shocker to me 2 days back. And thanks for the explanation. I could understand bsnl’s agony. I commit myself to save the nations telecom backbone. The govt has done enough to us and only one more year to show our gratitude back. Still cant digest this move by all telcos since 100 free sms a day had become a part and parcel of our life. Nowadays owning a mobile is cheap and using it is becoming costly.
sapattu raman January 11, 2013 at 6:34 pm
Vodafone (Andhra pradesh) —–100% increase in some 2G data packs.
Rs 98- 1GB -28 days (before) ……..now 650 mb 21 days validity
Rs 115-2GB-28 days (before)………now 1 GB 28 days validity (half the benefit means double the price)
Rs 155-3GB -28 days (before)……..now with drawn!!!!!!
Rs 450-unlimited-28 days ……..still there no change …
I use 450Rs pack for last 5 months for slow downloading in one old laptop. daily 1.7gb to 1.9 mb average download.
iam not sure whether the will throttle speed as there is no price change. Just did Rs 115-1gb and no downloading.just phone use.will try 450 pack again after holidays.
Aircel Rs 96-unlimited gprs is being used now at 40% less speed compared to Voda as a stop gap arrangement.
Cam January 10, 2013 at 2:47 pm
Even MTS has hiked their SMS rates without informing its customer, now they are charging Rs 1 per sms inspite of the sms pack active. pdating their tariff without even informing their own MTS gallery.
MTS is uwhen I speak with the MTS gallery they say they dont have any info on that.

“WhatsApp is free to download and try for the first year. After which, you have the option of subscribing to an additional year of service for $0.99 USD. ”
I don’t think Rs 50/year that much costly.

Common Man January 10, 2013 at 11:47 am
It was inevitable as the government raised the price of spectrum…….we can not blame these companies…our so called government should have pondered that if we could raise the price of spectrum …then it will effect the pocket on common people…….. Its is as simple as”Spectrum hike or else(tax or …) on operator>Operator price raised>Direct effect on pocket of mobile users”
Ganz January 10, 2013 at 8:25 am
its not for 30days.. its for 90days. for idea in kerala state,,
bhavin January 10, 2013 at 8:25 am
all three are thieves they if you have balance over 100 INR. they will activate any plan automatically weather its caller tunes or any other. and when you go to customer care only one answer :: “Sir, its been done by you. sorry we can not help you with this. bye”.
thats the reason i moved to BSNL and since last 2 year, not even single penny got cut from my balance.
and BSNL has best quality service and value for money.
Adil January 9, 2013 at 11:55 pm
Hey guys avoid airtel vodafone idea (A-Vo-Id) and adore aircel docomo reliance (A-Do-Re)

avisek January 9, 2013 at 11:02 pm
pls don’t blame the companies.IF THEY NOT HIKE THE PRICE ,THEY WILL NOT BE ABALE GOOD SERVICE TO US.MY DAD DO JOB IN BSNL.HE TOLD ME ALL PRIVATE OPERATORS WILL INCREASE THEIR TARIFF AFTER TARIFF HIKE BY BSNL.
RAJ January 9, 2013 at 10:48 pm
It is obvious that SMS tariff would increase.
If the Govt. limits SMS limit per day to 100 only then Operators network will remain idle per mobile connection for extra 100 SMS per day? so obviously the Consumer has to pay.
It is nothing to do with Mobile Operators ?
If TRAI says you can send 500 SMS per day at low cost? every operator will give sms at 2 paise per SMS because there is a large volume available.
Arka January 9, 2013 at 9:39 pm
Hi friends,I am from Kolkata circle.
I am so surprised to see the sms tariff hike.
I used Idea for sms purpose after Uninor’s off.
Now,Idea offers-RC44-600 L/N SMS-25 I2I+575 I2O-Val-30days(prev.100sms/day) &
RC57-775 L/N SMS-25 I2I+750 I2O-val-60days(prev.100sms/day).
And Vodafone offers-RC38-500 L+N sms-val-30days. For Airtel that is Rc39.
So,A win-win situation for A-Vo-Id group. The best value for money offers given by Idea in recent times. But,for me there is no use of 600/775 msgs,as I need around 50 msgs/day.
So,The only option left is TATA Docomo, which offer RC54-3000sms/month till now.
Arka January 9, 2013 at 9:57 pm
Sorry. The RC57 is valid for 45days which is same as previous.
Kaushik Roy January 10, 2013 at 10:15 am
Use Idea RC 32 – 100 sms per day
But validity is 15 days
sharath January 9, 2013 at 9:12 pm
but trai has putten a limit of 100 sms per day after per sms 50/- paise
how these tariffs will work?????????????????????????
please tell

i wonder how many of you think about the whole money the telecos have to put in with the license renewal and auctions… so its fair i say… you want a service you pay for it… and i wonder why we dont complain the same way when the price for fuel or other amenities is hiked… you complain for some time and then you are okay with it!!!! the telecom towers run on electricity and fuel… everything comes with a cost… inflation hits everyone!!!..
like some fable goes ” There ain’t no thing as a free lunch”…
even these sms websites some people mention here are getting personal details from you… p.s. “if you ain’t paying for it… you are the product being sold..”
& not here for a debate/fight.. jus my thoughts…
VB January 9, 2013 at 10:58 pm
“Inflation” is the whole and sole reason for inflation!
Every1 is hiking prices with the reason of inflation.
Dude…price hike is 4x n i dont think so its cz of hike in fuel/electricity o spectrum price.. Its all coz of weak laws of India(TRAI) + currupt govt. N dese operators r suckin off money from pockts of common man
i m realy suprised 2 read such a comment .i guess you mus b A-Vo-Id employee…r u??

vigrem January 9, 2013 at 12:20 pm
Try to (A-Vo-Id) using SMS facility..instead make calls and speak with your loved ones…Some truth can be revealed by the Services providers…that is (when u send a SMS or call a number in same network call charges is 1/8 times lesser of original charge u pay) e.g. if u make a call from Airtel-Airtel in local area actual u pay is 30 paise or 50 paise per minute. but actual charge for a min is 5 paise to 10 paise for minutes…also if u send SMS in same circle in local its actually free of cost , So better use free websites which offers SMS from PC to phone….Since a worked in this feild in past I know very well about services providers tactics …
Tharun George January 9, 2013 at 12:08 pm
I never used a SMS pack even when it was cheap. SMS should be free. I always use web sms from 16by2 and way2sms instead paying money to operators.
spiderman January 9, 2013 at 12:19 pm
If we need to send something without much worries, sms s the preferred way than whatsapp,viber,160by2 or whatever !

most of online sms site not deliver sms to DND number…….. The telecom sector need revenue to provide better connectivity and service.so please stop telling that operators are looting people..
Rudradeep Biswas January 9, 2013 at 3:21 pm
+1
Tharun George January 9, 2013 at 5:21 pm
I have not activated any sms pack. So idea charges Rs 1 for local sms and Rs 1.5 for national sms.
My calling tariff is 30p/min Idea-other, 20p/min Idea- Idea and STD 40p/min. Whats the point of having sms tariff 4 times than calling tariff? Why can’t they provide me sms at same rate as my voice tariff? Is sms costly than voice for operators?
This is called looting.
Esmail January 9, 2013 at 3:24 pm
both the websites 160by2 and way2sms are very convenient for group messaging which comes in handy to convey wishes and greetings during Festivals when mobile operators have their STV black out days, or when you need to send a short notification through SMS. Although when it comes to text chat which requires continuous exchange of messages and replies between two individuals these sites can get tedious since there is no thread view of messages and no inbox function either on the sites or mobile apps which link to these sites, so the person would need to send a text through the site, then read the reply in his regular cellphone inbox, then go back to the site or the app and reply again, and the process would continue.
As the uptake of mobile internet is increasing on the Edge and 3G platform, and as more and more people migrate to smartphones, we are witnessing a gradual shift of trend from conventional messaging to IM apps like whatsapp, viber, we chat, chat on, etc. the added advantage of which also includes the dissolving of international barriers, messaging overseas has become as easy as messaging locally.

When a computer is available with internet, its better to use these sites for sms. Since we can type faster on keyboard, copy paste text and its free and support up to 140 character.
On mobile we can use apps for the same and connect to WiFi at home/Office or Mobile internet to send sms free.
Also we already spend nearly Rs 100 on internet on mobile. There is no point in speding Rs 75 on SMS.
Also I don’t use sms for bulk forwarding and strictly use for emergencies only.

Ajay January 10, 2013 at 1:37 am

Currently the lowest tariff for SMS and Data are being provided by Reliance CDMA pan India, they are providing this through a combo recharge of Rs.94 which gives 18000 local+STD SMS and 6GB EVDO (3.1Mbps) data for 6 months, which comes up to Rs.15 per month for 3000 local+STD SMS and 1GB EVDO data. None of the GSM players will ever be able to match up to this.

Use way2sms, fullonsms, 160 by 2 ,online msg. Just recharge a net pack for 30days validity and both use internet and msges in a single pack. Airtel,Vodafone,Idea,Docomo all loosers hiked the price. So this is the only way to save our ‘Money’.

Consumer organisations should ask TRAI to set a termination charge for personals SMS also instead leaving it to telecos to decide among themselves. TRAI already set a termination charge of 5 paise per SMS for commercial SMSes. These telecos, often the cartel, Airtel, Idea and Vodafone, are demanding a termination charge at 10 paise for personal SMS. There is no option for other telecos except to raise tariffs. But, as calculated by BSNL on behalf of TRAI, transmitting an SMS costs less than 1 paisa each.
The best solution would be Consumer Organisation asking TRAI to set termination charges for personal SMS at 2 paise, or mandate a Bill And Keep method for SMSes. Bill And Keep is an excellent method used by telecos in USA and many developed contries. But, this cartel is against Bill And Keep mechanism, and insist on Termination Charges.

Vodafone also raise SMS and Data plan rate in Bihar circle. SMS 26 now only 350 SMS,then onnet sms 5paisa,offnet SMS 10 paisa.

Their looting idea to charge 10p termination charge is backfiring them…
Beauty is they are calculating on the basis of 5p termination charge (as told by Apex court to Aircel) and 2.5p (50% MINIMUM) margin and finally 7.5p per SMS in SMS packs (1000 SMS for Rs75).

now it will not matter , as all people are always online with their data packs . we can use skype / FB / gmail or any other service to be in touch .
also if anybody is wasting hugh money on calling , just use skype to call each other , it works fine with 2G data and for 20mins of calling it hardly take 175 KB data for voice . so if 2 users have skype on their mobile and they decide to talk on skype only for one complete month it will not take more than 1000MB 2G data . I m using it for long distance calling . completely free voice calling will save your long distance money .
sujit January 9, 2013 at 9:17 am
new tariffs are in effect since 27th dec.
And they raised it becoz of thr 10p termination charge.
